Quetiapine works by inhibiting the release of certain chemical substances in the brain which are responsible for causing anxiety and the symptoms of schizophrenia.
Quetiapine Fumarate is an atypical psychotropic agent belonging to the dibenzothiazepine derivatives. It acts as an antagonist at multiple neurotransmitter receptors, including serotonin 5HT1A and 5HT2, dopamine D1 and D2, histamine H1, and adrenergic α1 and α2 receptors. It has no appreciable affinity for cholinergic muscarinic and benzodiazepine receptors. The efficacy in schizophrenia is believed to be mediated through dopamine D2 and serotonin 5HT2 antagonism. Its antagonism of histamine H1 receptors may explain somnolence, and adrenergic α1 receptor antagonism may explain orthostatic hypotension.
