Ursodeoxycholic Acid changes the composition of bile by reducing cholesterol production and secretion into bile and decreasing intestinal cholesterol absorption. This makes the bile less saturated with cholesterol and allows cholesterol-rich gallstones to gradually dissolve.

It also promotes bile flow and may help protect liver cells from the damaging effects of certain bile acids.
