Itratec Oral Solution 100ml

Generic: Itraconazole

Type: Bottle

Pack Size: 1 Pc

Itraconazole is a triazole antifungal agent that inhibits fungal cytochrome P450-dependent enzymes involved in ergosterol production. Ergosterol is an essential component of fungal cell membranes. By disrupting its synthesis, itraconazole alters membrane structure and function, thereby inhibiting fungal growth.

Some formulations use SUBA (Super Bioavailability) technology, which incorporates the drug into a solid polymer dispersion to improve dissolution and absorption compared with conventional itraconazole formulations. The absorption and dosing of different formulations may vary.

  3. Pityriasis versicolor.
  4. Tinea pedis (athlete's foot).

Non-systemic Fungal Infections

  1. Vulvovaginal candidiasis: 200 mg twice daily for one day.
  2. Pityriasis versicolor: 200 mg once daily for seven days.
  3. Tinea corporis and tinea cruris: 100 mg once daily for 15 days or 200 mg once daily for seven days.
  4. Tinea pedis and tinea manuum: 100 mg once daily for 30 days.
  5. Oropharyngeal candidiasis: 100 mg once daily for 15 days. A different regimen may be required for immunocompromised patients.
  6. Onychomycosis: Treatment may involve 200 mg daily for three months or pulse therapy, depending on whether fingernails or toenails are affected.

Systemic Fungal Infections

Depending on the infection, treatment may involve:

  1. Aspergillosis: Typically 200 mg daily, with dose adjustments for invasive or disseminated infection.
  2. Candidiasis: Treatment may range from several weeks to several months.
  3. Non-meningeal cryptococcosis: Treatment may continue for approximately ten weeks.
  4. Cryptococcal meningitis: Requires specialist-directed therapy, often as part of a broader treatment regimen.
  5. Histoplasmosis: Treatment may continue for several months.
  6. Fungal infection prevention: Selected patients with AIDS or prolonged neutropenia may require preventive treatment under specialist supervision.

Important: Doses are not interchangeable between conventional itraconazole, SUBA formulations, and other strengths. Systemic infections and treatment in children require specialist guidance. Do not use the regimens above to self-treat.

✔️ Dosage & Administration

The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of the fungal infection, the patient's age and health, and the specific formulation prescribed. The following are general reference regimens for certain conventional 100 mg and 200 mg formulations, not a personalized treatment plan.

✔️ Side Effects

Possible side effects include:

  • Nausea and abdominal pain.
  • Indigestion and constipation.
  • Headache and dizziness.
  • Elevated liver enzymes.
  • Menstrual disturbances.
  • Skin rash, itching, hives, or swelling.
  • Peripheral neuropathy.
  • Low potassium levels, swelling and hair loss with prolonged treatment.

Rare but serious reactions include hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, and Stevens–Johnson syndrome. Seek urgent medical attention for yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, severe rash, facial swelling, or new or worsening shortness of breath.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

Itraconazole should generally be avoided during pregnancy unless a specialist determines that its use is essential. Breastfeeding while taking itraconazole is generally not recommended without medical advice. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

✔️ Contraindications

Patients with a known allergy to itraconazole or any ingredient in the formulation should not use itraconazole. It is generally avoided in patients with active or significant liver disease unless a specialist determines that treatment is necessary.

It must not be combined with certain interacting medicines, and it may be unsuitable for patients with heart failure or ventricular dysfunction because of its potential to worsen these conditions.

✔️ Drug Interactions

Itraconazole can interact with many medicines because it affects drug-metabolizing enzymes. Important interactions include:

  1. Certain medicines that can cause serious heart-rhythm problems: Some combinations are contraindicated, including selected antihistamines and gastrointestinal medicines.
  2. Statins: Simvastatin may reach dangerously high blood levels when taken with itraconazole.
  3. Sedatives: Oral midazolam and triazolam may have increased effects.
  4. Rifampicin, phenytoin and phenobarbital: These medicines can reduce itraconazole levels and treatment effectiveness.
  5. Digoxin and calcium channel blockers: Blood levels or adverse effects may increase.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines and supplements you use before starting treatment.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings
  • Take the medicine according to the instructions for your specific formulation. Conventional capsules are generally taken immediately after a full meal.
  • Reduced stomach acidity may decrease absorption of conventional itraconazole capsules. Antacids should generally be taken at least two hours after itraconazole, according to the product instructions.
  • SUBA formulations may have different food and administration requirements.
  • Liver function should be assessed when clinically indicated, particularly during prolonged treatment. Seek medical attention if symptoms of liver injury develop.
  • Inform your doctor if you have heart failure, liver disease, kidney disease, or a history of significant drug reactions.
  • Do not stop, extend, or repeat a course without medical advice.
✔️ Storage:

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
