Azonox Ultra is an antifungal medicine used to treat infections caused by fungi, including those of the mouth, throat, vagina, skin, fingernails, and toenails.
It works by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane, leading to the death of the fungus.
Oral capsules must be taken with food, preferably immediately after a full meal.
Adults:
- Oropharyngeal candidiasis: 100 mg/day × 15 days
- Vulvovaginal candidiasis: 200 mg twice daily × 1 day
- Pityriasis versicolor: 200 mg/day × 7 days
- Tinea corporis/cruris: 100 mg/day × 15 days
- Onychomycosis: 200 mg/day × 3 months
- Systemic infections: 100–200 mg/day; up to 200 mg twice daily in severe cases
- Prophylaxis in neutropenic/AIDS patients: 200 mg/day; up to 200 mg twice daily if required
Children: 5–10 mg/kg/day (max 200 mg/day). Safety not established in children <3 years.
Very Common (>10%): Nausea
Common (1–10%): Rash, vomiting, edema, headache, abnormal liver tests, diarrhea, fever, pruritus, abdominal pain, fatigue, dizziness
Uncommon (<1%): Hypokalemia, decreased libido, hepatitis, anorexia, malaise
Serious / Fatal (rare):
Itraconazole inhibits cytochrome P450–dependent ergosterol synthesis, impairing fungal cell membrane function.
Effective against:
Yeasts: Candida spp., Cryptococcus neoformans
Molds: Aspergillus spp., Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis
Dermatophytes: Trichophyton spp., Microsporum spp., Epidermophyton spp.
Others: Coccidioides immitis, Sporothrix schenckii, Malassezia furfur, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis
Also shows antiprotozoal activity against Leishmania spp.
Increased plasma concentration (toxicity risk): Oral anticoagulants, digoxin, corticosteroids, HIV protease inhibitors, macrolide antibiotics, benzodiazepines, calcium channel blockers, statins (lovastatin, simvastatin, atorvastatin).
Reduced plasma concentration (reduced efficacy): Carbamazepine, rifampin, rifabutin, phenytoin, phenobarbital, isoniazid, nevirapine, PPIs, H2 antagonists, antacids.
Contraindicated combinations (QT prolongation/torsades): Astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, quinidine, terfenadine, dofetilide, dronedarone, halofantrine, methadone.
Other serious risks:
Rhabdomyolysis with statins
Ergotism with ergot alkaloids
Severe respiratory depression with fentanyl
