Description:

  • Empa 10mg Tablet is a type of antidiabetic medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. It is used to treat type 2 diabetes when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to control blood sugar levels. This condition is caused when the body produces insufficient insulin or when the insulin it produces does not function properly.
  • The active ingredient in Empa 10mg Tablet is Empagliflozin, which works by blocking the SGLT-2 enzyme present in the proximal tubules of the kidney. This decreases the reabsorption of glucose by the kidneys and increases the excretion of glucose in the urine, resulting in a decrease in blood sugar levels in diabetic individuals.
  • It is important to take Empa 10mg Tablet as directed by your doctor, and for the duration they have prescribed, depending on your medical condition. Some common side effects of Empa 10mg Tablet may include thrush, painful or burning sensations while urinating, increased frequency of urination, and mild skin rash or itching. While most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will go away on their own, it is recommended to consult your doctor if they persist.
  • Empa 10mg Tablet should not be taken if you are allergic to any of its components. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is important to consult your doctor before taking this medication. Drinking alcohol while taking Empa 10mg Tablet may produce unwanted side effects, so it is best to avoid alcohol. The use of Empa 10mg Tablet in children is not recommended due to limited information on its effects. Inform your doctor of all medications you are taking and your medical history to avoid any undesirable side effects or interactions.

Indication of Empa 10mg Tablet

Empa 10mg Tablet is an anti-diabetic medication that includes Empagliflozin. It is used to treat individuals with type 2 diabetes who cannot be managed with diet and exercise alone. It can also help avoid heart disease in those with type 2 diabetes. It is also used to treat adult patients with heart failure who have poor pumping function.

Diabetes is described as your body's inability to make and utilize enough insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas), resulting in abnormal blood glucose levels. It can cause symptoms such as increased thirst, urine, and hunger, as well as hazy vision, numbness in the hands or feet, and exhaustion. Heart failure happens when the heart becomes too weak to pump enough blood to the lungs and the body.

Pharmacology

An inhibitor of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 is empagliflozin (SGLT-2). The kidney's SGLT2 co-transporters are in charge of reabsorbing glucose from the glomerular filtrate. The glucuronic effect of SGLT2 inhibition lowers the renal glucose threshold and inhibits renal absorption, which increases glucose excretion. Additionally, it lowers hyperglycemia, and blood pressure, and aids in weight loss.

Dosage & Administration of Empa 10 Tablet
  • The recommended dose of Empagliflozin is 10mg once daily, taken in the morning, with or without food. In patients tolerating Empagliflozin, the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily.
  • In patients with volume depletion, correcting this condition prior to initiation of Empagliflozin is recommended.
  • Take Empa 10 Tablet as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight, and disease condition. Do not stop taking Empa 10 Tablet unless your doctor advises you to stop.
Interactions
  • Empa 10mg Tablet may interact with insulin, blood pressure medications (hydrochlorothiazide, amlodipine), water pills/diuretics (furosemide), antibiotics used to treat eye infections (gatifloxacin), antihypertensive (metoprolol), steroids (prednisolone), thyroid hormones, and other medications. So, before taking the Empa 10mg Tablet, see your doctor if you are on any of these medications.
  • Taking Empa 10mg Tablet with alcoholic drinks may raise the risk of lactic acidosis (a build-up of lactic acid in the blood) and hypoglycemia, both of which are rare but potentially fatal conditions.
  • Empa 10mg Tablet should be avoided in individuals with vitamin B12 deficiency, renal or liver difficulties, cardiovascular illness (heart problems), or low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), since it may exacerbate the situation.
Contraindications

Patients having a history of serious allergic reactions to Empagliflozin or any of its constituents, severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, or dialysis should not take Empagliflozin.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of Empagliflozin in pregnant women. Empagliflozin should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known if Empagliflozin is excreted in human milk. It is not recommended when breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings
  • It might result in excessive fluid loss from your body (dehydration) or more frequent urination. Keep hydrated by consuming plenty of water.
  • When combined with other anti-diabetic drugs, alcohol, or if a meal is skipped or delayed, it may result in hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels).
  • Always keep some sugary snacks or fruit juice on hand in case you experience hypoglycemia symptoms like anxiety, trembling, or cold sweats.
  • Practice good hygiene because it can lead to genital fungal infections and/or urinary tract infections (UTIs) in both males and females.
  • Empa 10mg Tablet is not recommended for children below ten years of age. The dose is to be adjusted and recommended by a child specialist only for children over ten years. Due to limited therapeutic experience, elderly patients (above 75 years of age) should consult the doctor before taking Empa 10mg Tablet.
