✅ Description:
Ursodex contains Ursodeoxycholic Acid, a naturally occurring bile acid used in the treatment of different liver and biliary disorders. It works by lowering cholesterol concentration in bile through several mechanisms:
- Reducing intestinal cholesterol absorption
- Suppressing hepatic cholesterol synthesis
- Altering bile composition from supersaturated to unsaturated
Ursodeoxycholic Acid also promotes the formation of liquid cholesterol crystal complexes, facilitating the removal of cholesterol from the gallbladder into the intestine for elimination.
In cholestatic liver diseases, Ursodeoxycholic Acid exerts protective effects by:
- Protecting cholangiocytes from toxic bile acids
- Stimulating hepatobiliary secretion
- Protecting hepatocytes from bile acid-induced cell damage
After oral administration, it is well absorbed from the upper intestine and undergoes hepatic conjugation before being secreted into bile. Its biological half-life ranges from approximately 3.5 to 5.8 days.

Dosage should be individualized according to the disease condition and body weight.
- Gallstone dissolution: 8–12 mg/kg/day as a single bedtime dose or divided doses
- Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC): 10–15 mg/kg/day in 2–4 divided doses
- Acute viral hepatitis: 600 mg daily
- Alcoholic fatty liver: 300 mg daily
- Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC): 25–30 mg/kg/day
- NASH and gallstone dissolution: 13–15 mg/kg/day
Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by the physician.
✔️ Ursodex is contraindicated in patients with:
- Non-functioning gallbladder
- Calcified or pigmented gallstones
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Hypersensitivity to Ursodeoxycholic Acid or any component of the formulation
✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy: Classified as Pregnancy Category B. No evidence of fetal harm has been reported. It has been used effectively in cholestasis of pregnancy, especially during the last trimester.
- Breastfeeding: No significant problems have been documented during lactation.
However, use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should always be under medical supervision.
✔️ Drug Interactions
Avoid concomitant use with medications that increase cholesterol concentration in bile, such as estrogen-containing hormones.
The effectiveness of Ursodex may be reduced when used together with bile acid-binding agents, including:
- Cholestyramine
- Activated charcoal
- Antacids containing aluminum
A suitable time interval should be maintained between these medications and Ursodex.
✔️ Precautions & Warnings
Use Ursodex cautiously in patients with pre-existing liver disease. Regular monitoring of liver function may be recommended during prolonged therapy.
