✔️ How does Olic 5 work?

Obeticholic Acid works as a Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR) agonist. FXR is a receptor found in the liver, intestines, kidneys, and fat tissue that helps regulate bile acid production, lipid metabolism, and glucose balance.

By activating FXR, Obeticholic Acid:

• Reduces the production of new bile acids in the liver.
• Enhances the removal of bile acids from liver cells.
• Decreases bile acid accumulation and helps protect liver cells from damage.

✔️ Contraindications:

Olic 5 should not be used in patients with complete biliary obstruction.

✔️ Interaction

• Bile acid-binding resins may reduce the absorption and effectiveness of Obeticholic Acid.
• When used with warfarin, INR levels may decrease; monitoring and dose adjustment may be required.
• May increase blood levels of CYP1A2 substrates such as theophylline and tizanidine, especially those with a narrow therapeutic range.
• Avoid concurrent use with BSEP inhibitors (e.g., cyclosporine), as they may increase bile salt accumulation in the liver and worsen liver-related symptoms.

• Serious liver-related complications, including liver failure and death, have been reported in patients with advanced liver disease who received doses more frequently than recommended.
• Monitor liver enzymes and watch for signs of worsening liver function, such as kidney impairment, dehydration, or liver decompensation.
• Higher doses may increase the risk of:
  • Jaundice
  • Worsening ascites
  • Flare-ups of primary biliary cholangitis

Breastfeeding

• It is unknown whether Obeticholic Acid passes into breast milk.
• The benefits of breastfeeding should be weighed against the mother's need for treatment and any potential risks to the infant.
