✔️ Dosage Guidelines

Adult Dose (Ulcerative Colitis)

Active disease: The dose is individualized based on disease severity. The maximum dose may be up to 4 g daily, taken either once daily or divided into 2–4 doses.

Maintenance therapy: Dosage is adjusted individually, with a recommended dose of 2 g once daily.

Geriatric patients (≥65 years): Use with caution. Regular monitoring of blood cell counts is advised during mesalamine therapy.

Pediatric Dose

The safety and effectiveness in children below 6 years have not been established.

Evidence in children aged 6–18 years is limited.

Active disease (≥6 years): Individualized dosing, starting at 30–50 mg/kg/day in divided doses. The dose may be increased up to a maximum of 75 mg/kg/day, without exceeding 4 g/day (maximum adult dose).

Maintenance therapy: Start with 15–30 mg/kg/day in divided doses, not exceeding 2 g/day (recommended adult maintenance dose).

As a general guide, children weighing up to 40 kg may receive half the adult dose, while those over 40 kg may receive the standard adult dose.

Renal Considerations
Elderly patients are more likely to have reduced kidney function; therefore, mesalamine should be used cautiously, with appropriate monitoring of renal function.

• Use with caution in elderly patients and those with kidney impairment
• Do not use if you are allergic to salicylates or aminosalicylates
• Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
• Use during breastfeeding only if the benefits outweigh the risks, as the drug may pass into breast milk
