Alfumax ER Tablet is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Alfuzosin is a quinazoline derivative that selectively blocks α1-adrenergic receptors in the lower urinary tract. This action relaxes smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck, improving urine flow and relieving symptoms of BPH.The detailed uses of Alfumax ERTablet are as follows:
- Treats BPH (enlarged prostate) : Alfumax ERTablet helps manage symptoms of BPH in men, such as painful urination, difficulty urinating, incomplete bladder emptying, leakage of urine, and frequent or urgent need to urinate, especially at night.
- Improves Urine Flow: Alfumax ERTablet relaxes the muscles of the bladder and prostate, thereby reducing pressure on the urethra and facilitating easier urination.
- Reduces Risk of Urinary Retention (UR): Alfumax ERTablet helps lower the chances of postoperative UR after urologic surgery and reduces the need for urinary catheterisation due to acute UR.
- Delays Need for Prostate Surgery: By effectively controlling BPH symptoms, Alfumax ER Tablet can delay or reduce the need for surgical intervention in some cases.

- Severe hepatic impairment
- History of postural hypotension or micturition syncope

✔️ Dosage & Administration | Alfumax ER
Adults
Immediate-release: 2.5 mg three times daily
Maximum dose: 10 mg per day
The first dose should be taken at bedtime to minimize postural hypotension
Extended-release formulation: 10 mg once daily
Elderly Patients
Initially, 2.5 mg twice daily
Dose may be adjusted based on clinical response and tolerability
Acute Urinary Retention
Extended-release: 10 mg once daily
Initiate on the first day of catheterization
Duration: 3–4 days
Hepatic Impairment
Mild to moderate: Start with 2.5 mg once daily; may increase to 2.5 mg twice daily if needed
Severe hepatic impairment: Contraindicated
Renal Impairment
Start with 2.5 mg twice daily
Adjust dose according to patient response and tolerability
Method of Administration

Concomitant use with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir) significantly increases alfuzosin levels
