Tecavir 0.5 contains entecavir, an antiviral medicine used to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It works by inhibiting viral replication, helping reduce the amount of hepatitis B virus in the body and limiting ongoing liver damage. It does not eliminate the virus, so regular monitoring and long-term treatment may be necessary.
Tecavir 0.5 is generally taken on an empty stomach, at least two hours after a meal and two hours before the next meal. Take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor and at the same time each day. Do not stop treatment without medical advice, as discontinuation may cause hepatitis B to flare up and potentially lead to serious liver complications.
Before starting treatment, tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Kidney function may affect the required dose. Regular blood tests and liver assessments may be necessary during treatment and after discontinuation.
Important: Entecavir is used to treat hepatitis B, not HIV infection. If a patient has both HIV and hepatitis B, an appropriate HIV treatment regimen is essential because entecavir alone is not adequate HIV therapy.

Dose adjustments may be necessary in patients with renal impairment. An oral solution may be useful when smaller doses are required.
Adult Dose
Pediatric Dose
Entecavir may be indicated for children aged two years or older who weigh at least 10 kg, depending on treatment history and formulation. The dose is weight-based and must be determined by a specialist. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children younger than two years. Adolescents aged 16 years or older generally follow adult dosing recommendations when appropriate.
Renal Dose
Entecavir is primarily eliminated through the kidneys. Dose adjustment is required when creatinine clearance is below 50 mL/min.
Patients requiring the 1 mg regimen need different adjustments. The exact regimen must be selected by the treating clinician, with consideration of dialysis timing and the available formulation.
Common adverse effects include headache, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea. Less frequently, patients may experience diarrhea, vomiting, indigestion, insomnia, or drowsiness. Rare serious effects include lactic acidosis and severe liver complications.
Medicines that affect kidney function or compete for active tubular secretion may increase the blood concentrations of entecavir or the co-administered medicine. Inform your doctor about all medicines you take, particularly those that may affect renal function.
Available data are insufficient to fully assess the risks of entecavir during pregnancy. The decision to use it should be based on specialist assessment of the mother's condition and available treatment alternatives.
It is not known whether entecavir passes into human breast milk or affects milk production or the breastfed infant. Breastfeeding decisions should be discussed with the treating clinician, considering the mother's need for treatment and the potential risks to the infant.
Tecavir is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to entecavir or any ingredient in the formulation.
Store in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
