Esomeprazole
Esomeprazole inhibits the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme, commonly known as the gastric proton pump, in the acid-producing cells of the stomach. This reduces stomach acid secretion and helps relieve acid-related symptoms and promote healing of the esophagus and stomach lining.

Emep 40 contains esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the production of stomach acid. It is used to treat acid reflux, heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and peptic ulcers. It may also be prescribed for Helicobacter pylori infection in combination with appropriate antibiotics, prevention of certain NSAID-associated stomach ulcers, and Zollinger–Ellison syndrome.
Take Emep 40 exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dose and duration depend on your condition. Many delayed-release formulations are taken about one hour before a meal. Swallow the capsule or tablet whole unless the product instructions specifically allow another method. Continue treatment for the prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve.
Common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, dry mouth, and dizziness. Long-term use may increase the risk of low magnesium levels, vitamin B12 deficiency, and bone fractures in some patients. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or you experience severe or persistent diarrhea, reduced urination, swelling, or other unusual symptoms.
Seek urgent medical attention for signs of a severe allergic reaction, serious skin reactions, persistent watery diarrhea, or symptoms that may indicate kidney inflammation, such as reduced urination, blood in the urine, swelling, fever, or an unexplained rash.
Long-term use may be associated with low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, certain intestinal infections, and an increased risk of fractures in some patients.
Emep 40 should not be used in patients with a known allergy to esomeprazole, other substituted benzimidazole medicines, or any ingredient in the formulation. It may also be unsuitable with certain interacting medicines, including rilpivirine-containing products.
Tell your doctor before taking Emep 40 if you:
Do not use this medicine to self-treat persistent symptoms without medical assessment, especially if symptoms are new, worsening, or accompanied by warning signs.
Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines and supplements you take. Do not stop prescribed medicines or change doses without medical advice.
Take the missed dose when you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your usual schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Store according to the instructions on the product packaging. Keep out of reach of children and protect from excessive heat and moisture.
Consult your doctor before using Emep 40 during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Available data on related medicines have not established a clear increase in major birth defects, but treatment should be based on an assessment of benefits and potential risks. Limited information is available about esomeprazole during breastfeeding.
The following are general reference doses. The appropriate regimen depends on the diagnosis, formulation, and patient's medical condition.
Important: Emep 40 is a 40 mg product. Do not assume that every condition requires a 40 mg dose; some indications use lower doses. Intravenous treatment, where appropriate, must follow a separate clinician-directed regimen.
Dosing depends on the child's age, weight, diagnosis, and formulation. Esomeprazole is not appropriate for every child or every acid-related condition. Use only under a pediatrician's direction, following the approved product-specific instructions.
