Aprocin is an antibiotic preparation used to treat bacterial infections of the eye and ear. It contains ciprofloxacin, which works by stopping the growth and reproduction of susceptible bacteria. Aprocin is intended for external ophthalmic or otic use only and should be used in the dose and duration prescribed by your doctor.
For proper application, hold the dropper close to the affected eye or ear without touching the tip to the skin or other surfaces. Apply the prescribed number of drops and wipe away any excess liquid. Complete the full course of treatment even if your symptoms improve.
Possible side effects include:
Common:
Less common:
Bacterial Conjunctivitis – Adults:
Eye drops:
Instill 1–2 drops into the affected conjunctival sac every 2 hours while awake during days 1–2, followed by 1–2 drops every 4 hours while awake during days 3–7, or as prescribed by the physician.
Ophthalmic ointment, where applicable:
Apply approximately a 1.25 cm ribbon into the conjunctival sac every 8 hours during days 1–2, followed by every 12 hours during days 3–7.
Corneal Ulcer/Keratitis – Adults:
A more intensive regimen may be required, beginning with frequent administration during the first 24 hours and gradually reducing the frequency over the following days. Such treatment should be carried out strictly under the supervision of an ophthalmologist.
Children:
The safety and effectiveness of ciprofloxacin ophthalmic preparations may vary according to age and indication. Pediatric use should therefore follow the dosage prescribed by a physician.
There are limited data regarding the use of ciprofloxacin ophthalmic or otic preparations during pregnancy. Because systemic absorption following topical eye or ear administration is generally low, exposure is expected to be limited. Nevertheless, pregnant women should use Aprocin only after consulting their doctor.
Ciprofloxacin can pass into breast milk following systemic administration. With topical eye or ear use, systemic exposure is expected to be low. Breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before using Aprocin.
Topical ciprofloxacin generally produces much lower systemic exposure than oral ciprofloxacin. However, inform your doctor if you are taking other medicines, particularly:
Store Aprocin in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Keep the container tightly closed when not in use and out of the reach of children. Do not use the medicine after the expiry date or if the preparation appears contaminated or has changed in appearance.
