Lizox 400 contains linezolid, an oxazolidinone antibiotic used to treat certain serious bacterial infections. It is particularly active against susceptible Gram-positive bacteria and is used for conditions such as pneumonia and complicated skin and soft-tissue infections, including infections caused by MRSA and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium.
Lizox 400 may be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Take it for the full duration prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve earlier. Stopping treatment prematurely may allow the infection to return or become more difficult to treat.
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, and changes in blood-cell counts. Most are manageable, but persistent or severe symptoms should be reported to a healthcare professional.
Before starting treatment, inform your doctor if you have a history of blood disorders, uncontrolled hypertension, seizures, liver or kidney problems, or if you are taking antidepressants, decongestants, diabetes medicines, or other antibiotics.
Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections:
400 mg orally every 12 hours for 10–14 days.
MRSA infections:
600 mg orally every 12 hours for 7–21 days.
Community-acquired pneumonia:
600 mg orally every 12 hours for 10–14 days.
Nosocomial pneumonia:
600 mg orally every 12 hours for 10–14 days.
Complicated skin and skin-structure infections:
600 mg orally every 12 hours for 10–14 days.
Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium infection:
600 mg orally every 12 hours for 14–28 days.
Elderly patients:
No routine dosage adjustment is generally required solely because of age.
Dosage in children should be determined according to age, body weight, infection, and the prescribing physician's instructions.
Pneumonia, complicated skin infections, and VRE infections:
Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections:
No routine dose adjustment is generally required for mild to moderate hepatic impairment. Use in severe hepatic impairment should be determined carefully by the treating physician.
Routine dosage adjustment is generally not required in patients with renal impairment. However, patients with significant renal dysfunction require appropriate clinical monitoring.
In patients receiving hemodialysis, linezolid is generally administered after the dialysis session when appropriate.
A complete blood count (CBC) should be monitored regularly, particularly during prolonged therapy and in patients at increased risk of myelosuppression.
Longer treatment courses may increase the risk of anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, pancytopenia, peripheral neuropathy, and optic neuropathy. Report unexplained bruising, bleeding, weakness, numbness, tingling, or visual changes promptly.
If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Lizox 400. The medicine should be used during pregnancy or lactation only when the potential benefits justify the potential risks and under medical supervision.
Rifampicin and phenytoin:
May alter linezolid exposure and potentially reduce its effectiveness.
Insulin and oral antidiabetic medicines:
Linezolid may increase the risk of hypoglycemia in patients receiving diabetes treatment. Blood glucose should be monitored appropriately.
Tramadol:
Concurrent use may increase the risk of seizures and serotonergic adverse effects.
Antidepressants and other serotonergic medicines:
Combining linezolid with MAOIs, TCAs, SNRIs, and other serotonergic medicines may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Examples include certain medicines such as bupropion, vilazodone, mirtazapine, buspirone, trazodone, nefazodone, and meperidine.
Sympathomimetic and vasopressor medicines:
Medicines such as pseudoephedrine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, and dobutamine may cause a significant increase in blood pressure when combined with linezolid.
Always provide your doctor with a complete list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements before starting Lizox 400.
