Fixcef Plus 500mg+125mg Tablet

Fixcef Plus is a combination antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It contains cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, and clavulanic acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. This combination helps treat infections caused by bacteria that may be resistant to cefuroxime alone.

Cefuroxime is a bactericidal second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by interfering with bacterial cell-wall synthesis, ultimately causing bacterial cell death. It is active against a broad range of susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including some beta-lactamase-producing strains.

Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It binds to and inactivates certain beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria. This protects cefuroxime from enzymatic degradation and helps extend its antibacterial activity against susceptible beta-lactamase-producing organisms.

Dosage & Administration

The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of infection, the patient's age, kidney function, and response to treatment. Use Fixcef Plus strictly as directed by the doctor's prescription.

Adults and adolescents 13 years and older

• Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 250 mg twice daily for 5–10 days
• Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis: 250 mg twice daily for 10 days
• Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 250–500 mg twice daily for 10 days
• Secondary bacterial infection of acute bronchitis: 250–500 mg twice daily for 5–10 days
• Skin and soft-tissue infections: 250–500 mg twice daily for 10 days
• Uncomplicated urinary tract infection: 250 mg twice daily for 7–10 days
• Community-acquired pneumonia: 250–500 mg twice daily for 5–10 days
• Early Lyme disease: 500 mg twice daily for 20 days
• MDR typhoid fever: 500 mg twice daily for 10–14 days

For other infections, including gonorrhea or serious systemic infections, dosing should be determined by a physician.

Children 3 months to 12 years

The dose is generally calculated according to body weight and the type of infection. A physician should determine the appropriate dose and treatment duration.

Fixcef Plus tablets may be taken with or without food, as prescribed.

Do not stop the antibiotic early even if you start feeling better unless your doctor advises you to do so.

Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking. Important interactions include:

• Probenecid: May increase cefuroxime levels in the blood.
• Medicines that reduce stomach acidity: May decrease the absorption and effectiveness of oral cefuroxime.
• Potent diuretics: Concurrent use may require caution, particularly in patients at risk of kidney problems.

Contraindications

Fixcef Plus should not be used in patients with:

• Known allergy or hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the medicine
• A history of serious hypersensitivity reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics
• Previous or active pseudomembranous colitis, unless specifically advised by a physician

Side Effects

Most patients tolerate Fixcef Plus well. Possible side effects include:

Common

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal discomfort or abdominal pain

Rare but serious

• Skin rash or itching
• Hives
• Angioedema
• Severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis
• Serum sickness-like reactions
• Kidney dysfunction
• Overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms with prolonged use
• Antibiotic-associated colitis

Seek immediate medical attention if severe diarrhea, breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, or a severe skin reaction develops.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Cefuroxime may be used during pregnancy when the potential benefits outweigh the risks and when prescribed by a doctor. The need for treatment should be assessed individually, particularly during early pregnancy.

Cefuroxime passes into breast milk in small amounts. Although significant effects are not generally expected, breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before using Fixcef Plus.

Precautions & Warnings

• Use Fixcef Plus only for bacterial infections for which it has been prescribed.
• Tell your doctor if you have a history of antibiotic-associated colitis or other gastrointestinal disorders.
• Patients receiving potent diuretics may require additional caution.
• Inform your doctor if you have kidney problems, as dosage adjustment may be necessary.
• Stop treatment and seek medical attention if symptoms of a severe allergic reaction occur.
• Prolonged antibiotic treatment may result in the growth of organisms that are not susceptible to the medicine.
• Do not share this antibiotic with another person or use leftover doses from a previous infection.

Storage Conditions

Store Fixcef Plus in a cool, dry place below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep it out of the reach and sight of children.
