Bactofree 2% Ointment

✔️ Pharmacology

• Mechanism of Action: Mupirocin is a naturally occurring antibiotic produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through reversible binding to bacterial isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase.
• Spectrum of Activity: Effective against a wide range of bacteria, including:
  • Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA) and Streptococcus pyogenes.
  • Gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae.
• Resistance: Due to its unique mechanism, mupirocin shows no cross-resistance with other antimicrobial agents and is bactericidal at topical concentrations.

✔️ Side Effects of Bactofree 2% Ointment

Common side effects may include:

• Application site reactions (burning, irritation, itching, redness).
• Rarely, systemic reactions (nausea, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, allergic reactions).

Limited data is available on overdose. In case of an overdose, supportive treatment and monitoring are recommended.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Bactofree 2% Ointment

• Apply a small amount of Bactofree ointment to the affected area 3 times daily for up to 10 days.
• Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness established for ages 2 months to 16 years through well-controlled studies.

Usage should be as per the advice of a registered medical practitioner.

• No known drug interactions were identified with mupirocin ointment.

✔️ Contraindications

Contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any of its components.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

• Animal studies have shown no harm to the fetus; however, there is limited clinical experience during pregnancy. Use only if benefits outweigh risks.
• It is unknown if mupirocin is excreted in human milk, so caution is advised when administered to nursing mothers.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Not for ophthalmic or intranasal use.
• Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
• Avoid contact with the eyes, particularly when used on the face.
• Not suitable for use at the site of central venous cannulation or with cannulae.
• Discontinue use in case of severe local irritation or sensitization and consider alternative therapy.
• Do not mix with other preparations to avoid dilution and loss of antibacterial activity.
• Clean the area before applying Bactofree.
• If the condition does not improve within 3-5 days, consult your doctor.
• Store the ointment properly and follow all usage instructions for best results.
