Proton P 20mg Tablet 1 Strip

Generic: Pantoprazole

Type: Tablet

Pack Size: 10 Pcs

Pantoprazole is a medicine belonging to the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class. It reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach and is commonly used to manage acid-related digestive disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and Zollinger–Ellison syndrome. It may also be prescribed for erosive oesophagitis and other conditions associated with excessive stomach acid.

  • Lifestyle changes may help control acid reflux and heartburn alongside prescribed treatment.
  • Identify and limit foods or drinks that trigger your symptoms. Common triggers include spicy or fatty foods, chocolate, peppermint, citrus fruits, tomatoes and caffeinated drinks.
  • Eat smaller meals if large meals worsen your symptoms.
  • Avoid lying down for around three hours after eating.
  • If symptoms occur at night, raise the head of your bed using a suitable wedge or bed risers.
  • Avoid smoking and consider limiting alcohol if either worsens your symptoms.
  • Maintain a healthy weight where appropriate and remain physically active.
  • Dietary changes should be based on your own symptoms; no single food or drink is proven to prevent or cure all acid-related disorders.

✅ Description:

Pantoprazole works by blocking the activity of the gastric proton pump, an enzyme known as H⁺/K⁺-ATPase found in the acid-producing cells of the stomach. This action suppresses gastric acid secretion, helping relieve symptoms such as heartburn and acid reflux while allowing damaged tissues in the food pipe and stomach to heal.

✔️ Pantoprazole is prescribed for several acid-related conditions, including:
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Reduces stomach acid that flows back into the oesophagus, helping relieve heartburn and acid reflux.
  • Erosive Oesophagitis: Helps heal inflammation and damage to the lining of the food pipe caused by repeated exposure to stomach acid.
  • Peptic Ulcers: Supports the healing of ulcers in the stomach or duodenum by reducing acid exposure.
  • Gastric Ulcers: Helps treat sores that develop in the stomach lining.
  • Duodenal Ulcers: Reduces acid secretion to support healing of ulcers in the first part of the small intestine.
  • Zollinger–Ellison Syndrome: Controls excessive gastric acid production associated with this uncommon condition.
  • Prevention of Certain NSAID-Related Ulcers: May be prescribed to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers in selected patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Pantoprazole may also be included in a combination regimen with antibiotics to eradicate Helicobacter pylori when indicated. Treatment depends on the diagnosed condition and the prescribing clinician's instructions.

✔️ Side Effects:
  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Vomiting
  • Flatulence
  • Dizziness
  • Joint pain
✔️ Benefits of Pantoprazole

By lowering stomach acid production, Pantoprazole can help reduce heartburn, acid regurgitation, and other symptoms associated with acid reflux. It also promotes healing of acid-related damage to the oesophagus and ulcers in the stomach or duodenum.

In conditions involving excessive acid secretion, such as Zollinger–Ellison syndrome, a clinician may adjust the dose according to the patient's response and clinical needs.

Pantoprazole is not a general digestive aid, and it is not routinely indicated for Crohn's disease-associated ulcers unless there is a separate, appropriate reason to use acid-suppressing treatment.

✔️ Alcohol

Alcohol: Alcohol may worsen reflux symptoms in some people. Limiting or avoiding it may help manage heartburn.

✔️ Use in Children

Pantoprazole may be prescribed to children for specific conditions when the relevant product is approved for their age group. The permitted age, formulation and dose vary by product and indication. Do not give it to a child without medical advice.

✔️ Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Pantoprazole. Your healthcare professional can assess the potential benefits and risks and determine whether this medicine is appropriate for you.

✔️ Driving:

Pantoprazole does not usually impair driving, but avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience dizziness or other symptoms that affect alertness.

✔️ Directions for Use
  • Take Pantoprazole exactly as directed by your doctor.
  • It is generally taken before a meal, commonly around 30–60 minutes beforehand. Follow the instructions supplied with your specific formulation.
  • If prescribed once daily, it is often taken before breakfast. If prescribed twice daily, follow your doctor's directions for the timing of both doses.
  • Swallow delayed-release tablets whole with water. Do not crush, chew or break them.
  • Do not increase the dose, take extra doses, or extend the treatment period without medical advice.
✔️ Warnings and Precautions
  1. Allergy: Do not take Pantoprazole if you have a known allergy to Pantoprazole or any of its ingredients.
  2. Liver problems: Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, as additional assessment or dose adjustment may be necessary.
  3. Low magnesium or vitamin B12: Long-term use may contribute to low magnesium or vitamin B12 levels in some patients.
  4. Bone health: Prolonged treatment, particularly at high doses, may be associated with a higher risk of fractures in certain patients. People at risk of osteoporosis should discuss appropriate calcium and vitamin D intake with their healthcare professional.
  5. Possible stomach cancer: Pantoprazole may relieve symptoms without treating an underlying serious condition. Seek medical assessment for unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, severe or continuing stomach pain, or signs of gastrointestinal bleeding.
  6. Endoscopy or laboratory tests: Inform your doctor and laboratory staff that you take Pantoprazole before relevant investigations, as it may affect the interpretation of certain tests.
  7. Long-term treatment: Use the lowest effective dose for the duration recommended by your doctor. Periodic review may be appropriate during prolonged therapy.

Do not discontinue prescribed treatment or start long-term supplementation solely on the basis of potential nutrient deficiencies without discussing it with your healthcare professional.

✔️ Drug Interactions

Pantoprazole may affect the absorption or action of certain medicines. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription medicines, non-prescription products and supplements you use.

Medicines that may require particular attention include:

  • Warfarin: Monitoring may be needed because changes in anticoagulant effect have been reported.
  • Methotrexate: High-dose methotrexate treatment may require additional monitoring.
  • Atazanavir and some other HIV medicines: Reduced stomach acidity may interfere with the absorption of certain antiretroviral drugs.
  • Ketoconazole, itraconazole and other pH-sensitive medicines: Their absorption may be affected by changes in stomach acidity.
  • Digoxin: Monitoring may be appropriate in selected patients.
  • Iron supplements: Absorption may be affected in some circumstances.
  • Clopidogrel: Discuss the combination with your doctor or pharmacist so the suitability of treatment can be assessed.
✔️ Storage:

Store Pantoprazole in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and moisture. Keep it in its original packaging when appropriate and out of the reach of children. Do not use the medicine after its expiry date.
