Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is a water-soluble vitamin, your body does not store it. You must obtain what you require from food, which includes citrus fruits, broccoli, and tomatoes.
Vitamin C is required for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body. It aids in the production of collagen, a protein that is essential in the formation of skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Vitamin C is required for wound healing as well as bone and tooth repair and maintenance. It also aids the body's absorption of iron from nonheme sources.
The water-soluble vitamin Ceevit is easily absorbed from the digestive system and is present in all body tissues. It's thought to play a role in the biological oxidations and reductions that take place during cellular respiration. It is necessary for the production of intracellular and collagenous material. When dietary intake is insufficient and increased demand is not met, vitamin C deficiency arises. Scurvy, a well-known syndrome brought on by deficiency, is characterized by capillary fragility, bleeding—especially from small blood vessels and the gums—anemia, lesions on the cartilage and bones, and slow wound healing.
Oral Administration-
Daily intake of dietary vitamin C (according to the National Academy of Sciences) is listed below.
Adult
Pediatric
Because smoking depletes vitamin C, people who smoke may need an additional 35 mg per day.
The dose recommended to prevent or treat many of the conditions mentioned in the Uses section is often 500 - 1,000 mg per day
Parenteral Administration-
▪ Ceevit is usually administered orally. When oral administration is not feasible or when malabsorption
is suspected, the drug may be administered IM, IV, or subcutaneously. When given parenterally, utilization of the vitamin reportedly is best after IM administration and that is the preferred parenteral route.
Potentially hazardous interactions: Ceevit is incompatible in solution with aminophylline, bleomycin, erythromycin, lactobionate, nafcillin, nitrofurantoin sodium, conjugated estrogen, sodium bicarbonate, sulphafurazole diethanolamine, chloramphenicol sodium succinate, chlorothiazide sodium, and hydrocortisone sodium succinate.
Useful interactions: Ascorbic acid increases the apparent half-life of paracetamol and enhances iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
Ceevit has little toxicity and only mega-doses of vitamin C may cause diarrhea, abdominal bloating, and iron over-absorption that is harmful in patients with thalassemia, sideroblastic anemia, and hemochromatosis; hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, and hemolysis in patients with glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. A pregnant woman taking more than 5 gm/day may suffer fetal abortion.
Ceevit is safe in normal doses in pregnant women, but a daily intake of 5 gm or more is reported to have caused abortion. The drug may be taken safely during lactation.
Should be stored in a dry place below 30˚C. Keep out of reach of children.
