Description:

Flexifen 10mg Tablet is an anti-spastic agent and muscle relaxer used to treat muscle symptoms caused by conditions such as multiple sclerosis or spinal cord lesions. It can alleviate pain, muscle spasms, and stiffness associated with these conditions. However, Flexifen 10mg Tablet should not be used by individuals under the age of 12, those with allergies to the medication, or breastfeeding mothers. Alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication, as it can temporarily reduce muscle tone and affect balance and motor skills.

This medication is not considered safe during pregnancy, and individuals with kidney disease, a history of stroke or blood clots, epilepsy, seizure disorders, or those taking narcotic medications should consult their doctor before using Flexifen 10mg Tablet.

Possible side effects may include ringing or buzzing in the ears, skin rashes, dizziness, muscle weakness, constipation, mood changes, confusion, nausea, vomiting, headache, and difficult or painful urination.

Patients should follow their doctor's instructions carefully, take the medication as prescribed, and not discontinue it without consulting their healthcare provider. Abrupt discontinuation can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as seizures and hallucinations. If discontinuation is necessary, the doctor may recommend gradually reducing the dose.

Patients should also avoid taking other prescription or over-the-counter sleep-inducing drugs, sedatives, or antispasmodics without consulting their prescriber. Some common side effects like drowsiness, lethargy, or dizziness may occur temporarily, so caution should be exercised when driving or engaging in activities requiring alertness until the individual's response to the medication is known. Eating frequent small meals or using lozenges may help reduce gastrointestinal upset. Any unresolved insomnia, painful urination, changes in urinary patterns, constipation, or persistent confusion should be reported to the doctor.

The uses and effects of the medicine may vary from person to person, so it is advisable to consult a rheumatologist before using Flexifen 10mg Tablet.

How does Flexifen 10mg Tablet work?

Flexifen 10mg Tablet works by reducing or blocking the activity of certain nerves within a part of the brain that controls the contraction and relaxation of muscles, improving the movement of muscles and helping them relax.

  • Dry mouth
  • Sleepiness
  • Weakness

Quick Suggestions:
  • Regular exercise, such as jogging and walking, promotes muscle stretching, reducing the risk of spasms, tears, and sprains. Massages can also be beneficial.
  • Maintain a comfortable temperature environment, avoiding extremes of cold and heat, and opt for loose-fitting clothing.
  • Adequate rest and sleep are essential. Change your position every two hours to prevent pressure sores.
  • Hot or cold therapy can be effective for treating muscle spasms. Apply an ice pack or hot pack to the affected muscle for 15-20 minutes.
  • It's important to follow your doctor's advice and undergo regular blood tests to monitor liver function.
  • If you have surgery requiring general anesthesia, inform your doctor that you are taking Flexifen 10mg Tablet.
  • If you experience mood swings, depression, or have suicidal thoughts, seek immediate medical attention and consult your doctor.
Muscle Spasm:

Muscle spasms are characterized by sudden, involuntary contractions of muscles, often resulting in pain and discomfort. These spasms can occur when nerve impulses controlling muscle movements are disrupted. Common symptoms of muscle spasms include:

  • Muscle tightness
  • Joint stiffness
  • Unusual posture
  • Difficulty in moving
  • Pain in affected muscles and joints

Muscle spasms can be triggered by various factors such as fatigue, stress, extreme temperatures (both hot and cold), infections, and wearing tight clothing.

The treatment of muscle spasms typically involves the use of muscle relaxants and exercise:

Muscle Relaxants: These medications work by sedating the muscles, helping to inhibit painful contractions.

Exercise: Regular exercise, including stretching exercises, can help prevent muscle spasms. Stretching exercises promote muscle flexibility, reducing the likelihood of spasms, tears, and sprains.

Pharmacology

Baclofen works by activating GABAB receptors in the spinal cord, which inhibits both monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes. This action blocks the release of neurotransmitters like glutamate and aspartate. Additionally, Baclofen can lead to central nervous system (CNS) depression by acting at intraspinal sites. It also has an antinociceptive (pain-relieving) effect.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Baclofen is classified as pregnancy category B3. While it can cross the placental barrier, its safe use during pregnancy has not been definitively established. The potential benefits should be weighed against the potential risks, and its use during pregnancy should be based on the physician's judgment. Baclofen is excreted in breast milk, but available evidence suggests that the amounts are small and unlikely to harm the infant.

Precautions & Warnings

Several precautions should be observed when using Baclofen, including careful dosage adjustment in patients with impaired renal function or undergoing chronic hemodialysis. Patients with psychiatric disorders, epilepsy, or a history of these conditions should be closely monitored as exacerbations may occur. Baclofen may lower the seizure threshold, potentially causing seizures upon discontinuation or in cases of overdose. Caution is advised in individuals with peptic ulcers, cerebrovascular diseases, or hepatic, renal, or respiratory failure. Respiratory and cardiovascular function should be closely monitored, especially in patients with cardiopulmonary or respiratory muscle weakness. Baclofen may lead to improved neurogenic bladder emptying, but acute urinary retention can occur in individuals with preexisting sphincter hypertonia.

Storage Conditions
  • Flexifen 10mg Tablet should be stored at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat.
  • Keep them out of the reach and sight of children and pets.
