Description:

  • Atova 20mg Tablet is a medication that contains Atorvastatin, which belongs to a class of drugs called statins. It is primarily prescribed to treat raised cholesterol levels in the body. Atorvastatin works by slowing down the production of cholesterol in the body, thereby reducing the amount of cholesterol that can build up on the walls of arteries and potentially block blood flow to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body.
  • The medication is used to lower the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol in the blood while increasing the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or "good" cholesterol. By effectively managing cholesterol levels, Atova 20mg Tablet helps in preventing heart diseases like heart attacks and strokes.
  • The prescribed dose of Atova 20mg Tablet is typically once a day at the same time. The exact dosage and frequency may vary depending on your specific medical condition, so it's essential to follow your doctor's instructions. You can take the tablet with or without food, but it should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Avoid chewing, biting, or breaking the tablet.
  • While taking Atova 20mg Tablet, there is a possibility of experiencing certain side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Some common side effects include allergic reactions, headache, blurred vision, pain, constipation, nausea, diarrhea, muscle spasms, joint swelling, and back pain. Most of these side effects are generally not serious and tend to resolve over time. However, if you notice yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice), dark urine, or experience repeated unexplained muscular pain, it's important to consult your doctor immediately.
  • It's worth noting that in rare cases, Atova 20mg Tablet may cause a breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, which can lead to kidney failure. This condition is more likely to occur in the elderly, individuals with kidney disease, and those with poorly controlled hypothyroidism. If you fall into any of these categories, it's crucial to discuss your medical history and any potential risks with your doctor before taking this medication.
  • Atova 20mg Tablet should not be prescribed to children under ten years of age. It's important to inform your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to Atova 20mg Tablet in the past, have liver or kidney problems, are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, is breastfeeding, have severe lung disease, have a history of heart attack or stroke caused by bleeding in the brain, have hypothyroidism, consumes more than two servings of alcohol per day, or have a muscle disorder like fibromyalgia. These factors can affect the suitability and dosage of the medication for your specific situation.

Indication

Atova 20mg Tablet is used to lower the lipid or bad cholesterol in the blood and reduces the risk of heart disease.

Pharmacology

Atorvastatin is indeed a selective HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, which means it specifically targets and inhibits the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. HMG-CoA reductase is a key enzyme involved in the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. It catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A) into mevalonate, which is an important precursor in the synthesis of sterols, including cholesterol. By inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, Atorvastatin effectively reduces the production of cholesterol in the liver. This inhibition leads to a decrease in intracellular cholesterol levels. In response to the decreased cholesterol levels, the liver increases the expression of LDL receptors on the surface of liver cells. The increased number of LDL receptors enhances the uptake and catabolism (breakdown) of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol particles from the bloodstream. LDL cholesterol is often referred to as "bad" cholesterol because elevated levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. By reducing cholesterol synthesis and increasing LDL receptor activity, Atorvastatin helps lower plasma levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. This can have a positive impact on reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks and strokes.
