How to Use a Pregnancy Test Kit: When to Test and Read Results

Period late? Learn when to take a pregnancy test, why first-morning urine can help, how to read one or two lines, and what to do after positive or negative results.

Your period is late. Maybe you have been hoping for this news; maybe the delay has brought worry, or a mixture of both. Wanting to check privately at home is completely normal, and a home pregnancy test can be useful when it is used at the right time and in the right way.

The confusing part is usually not buying the kit—it is knowing when to test, whether morning urine matters, what one or two lines mean, and what to do if the result is negative but your period still does not come. This guide focuses on those practical questions without making assumptions about your relationship or personal circumstances.

How does a home pregnancy test work?

Home pregnancy tests look for hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in urine. This hormone starts to be produced after pregnancy begins and rises over time. A home kit tells you whether hCG is detected; it does not measure the exact amount.

Different products work differently. Some are cassettes, some are strips and some are midstream devices. The instructions supplied with your specific kit should always take priority.

When should you take a pregnancy test?

The source material is not completely identical on timing. Bangladeshi gynaecology and obstetrics specialist Dr Farzana Sharmin has advised testing at least seven days after the expected period date. Shohay Health says testing can begin from the first day of a missed period, while NHS guidance also supports testing after a missed period and repeating the test later if the result is negative but pregnancy is still suspected. FDA information is more conservative about timing for the most reliable result.

A practical approach is: test after your period is missed and follow the instructions on your kit. Testing too early can produce a false negative because hCG may not yet be high enough for that kit to detect.

Why is first-morning urine often recommended?

Dr Farzana Sharmin recommends the first urine of the morning. Morning urine is usually more concentrated, which may make hCG easier to detect, especially early in pregnancy. You can test at another time of day, but very dilute urine can make an early result harder to interpret.

How to use a pregnancy test kit: 6 steps

1. Check the expiry date and packaging

Do not use an expired or damaged kit. Check that the packet is intact and the expiry date has not passed.

2. Read the instructions before starting

Find out where the urine sample goes, how long to wait and when the result should be read. These details can vary between brands and kit types.

3. Collect or apply the sample correctly

Some tests are held in the urine stream; others need urine collected in a clean container and applied to a strip or cassette. Follow the exact method shown for your product.

4. Use first-morning urine when practical

This is especially helpful when you are testing early, because the sample is usually more concentrated.

5. Wait for the time stated on the kit

Many tests show a result within a few minutes, but the correct reading window depends on the product. Do not assume every kit has the same timing.

6. Read the result using the kit diagram

With many cassette tests:

  • C line + T line usually means positive
  • only a C line usually means negative
  • no C line can mean the test is invalid

Because designs vary, use the picture and wording supplied with your own kit.

What does a faint second line mean?

A faint T line can happen when hCG is still relatively low. If the result is difficult to interpret, repeating the test after a few days or discussing a lab blood test with a clinician is more useful than guessing from the line colour.

What should you do after a positive result?

A positive home result is a strong indication of pregnancy, but clinical confirmation and next-step care still matter. Dr Farzana Sharmin has discussed blood beta-hCG testing; depending on timing and symptoms, a clinician may also recommend follow-up or ultrasound later.

  • book an appointment with a gynaecologist or other appropriate clinician
  • avoid starting medicines, supplements or herbal products on your own
  • avoid smoking and alcohol
  • discuss pregnancy care, nutrition and follow-up

What if the test is negative but your period still has not come?

This is common. One of the biggest reasons is testing too early. hCG may not yet be high enough for the kit to detect. Incorrect technique, an expired kit or a very dilute urine sample can also affect the result.

If your period still does not come, repeat the test after a few days. NHS guidance suggests repeating after about a week if pregnancy is still suspected. If the second test is negative and your period remains absent, speak with a gynaecologist.

Irregular periods can have other causes, including PCOS or thyroid problems, which need a separate medical assessment.

What are common early pregnancy symptoms?

NHS lists a missed period as an important early sign for people with a regular cycle. Other possible symptoms include:

  • nausea or vomiting
  • unusual tiredness
  • breast tenderness
  • frequent urination
  • changes in taste or smell
  • light spotting in some people

These symptoms can also occur for other reasons. Symptoms alone cannot confirm pregnancy.

Can salt or toothpaste be used as a pregnancy test?

No. Salt, toothpaste and similar home methods are not scientifically validated pregnancy tests. Use an approved hCG test kit or a clinical test instead.

When should you seek medical advice urgently?

If pregnancy is possible, do not ignore:

  • persistent pain on one side of the lower abdomen
  • vaginal bleeding or brown watery discharge
  • shoulder-tip pain
  • pain or discomfort when passing urine or stool

NHS guidance on ectopic pregnancy says medical advice is needed when these symptoms occur together, even if you have not yet had a positive pregnancy test.

Go to emergency care immediately for sudden severe abdominal pain, marked dizziness or fainting, nausea with collapse, or looking very pale. A ruptured ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening.

Who has a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy?

NHS lists previous ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, fertility treatment such as IVF, use of an IUD/IUS, smoking and age over 35 among the risk factors. Having a risk factor does not mean an ectopic pregnancy will happen, but warning symptoms should not be delayed.

What if vomiting becomes severe?

If you are vomiting repeatedly and cannot keep food or fluids down, seek medical advice. Dehydration can develop quickly.

What should you check before buying a test kit?

  • expiry date
  • sealed, undamaged packaging
  • clear instructions
  • test type: cassette, strip or midstream
  • whether you may need a second test if the first is negative or unclear

Buying from a licensed pharmacy makes it easier to check product condition and expiry.

What products belong in the related-products section?

Only home pregnancy test devices are appropriate here. This article does not recommend fertility medicines, emergency pills, hormonal medicines, vitamins or supplements.

Frequently asked questions

How does a pregnancy test kit work?

It detects hCG in urine. hCG is produced after pregnancy begins.

When should I take a pregnancy test?

Testing after a missed period is practical. One Bangladeshi specialist recommends waiting at least seven days after the expected date, while other sources allow earlier testing. Follow your kit label and remember that early testing can give a false negative.

Do I have to use first-morning urine?

No, but morning urine is usually more concentrated and can improve detection when testing early.

Do two lines mean positive?

With many cassette tests, C and T lines together mean positive. Always confirm using your kit’s instructions because designs vary.

Does a negative result definitely mean I am not pregnant?

No. Testing too early, dilute urine or incorrect use can cause a false negative. Repeat the test if your period does not come.

What should I do after a positive result?

Arrange clinical confirmation and discuss next-step pregnancy care. Do not start medicines or supplements on your own.

What if two tests are negative but my period is still absent?

See a gynaecologist. Causes other than pregnancy, including PCOS or thyroid problems, may need assessment.

Can salt or toothpaste confirm pregnancy?

No. These are not validated methods.

Which symptoms are an emergency?

Sudden severe abdominal pain, bleeding, fainting, marked dizziness or collapse need urgent medical assessment because ectopic pregnancy is possible.
