✔️ Pharmacology
Ondansetron works by blocking serotonin (5-HT3) receptors both peripherally (in the GI tract) and centrally (in the brain). This prevents the activation of the vomiting reflex caused by chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgical procedures.
✔️ Dosage & Administration
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting:
Adults: 24 mg (three 8 mg films) 30 minutes before chemotherapy.
Pediatrics (12–17 years): 8 mg before chemotherapy, followed by another 8 mg after 8 hours, then every 12 hours for 1–2 days post-therapy.
Children (4–11 years): 4 mg three times daily for 1–2 days post-chemotherapy.
Radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting:
Adults: 8 mg film three times daily.
Postoperative nausea and vomiting:
Adults: 16 mg (two 8 mg films) 1 hour before anesthesia.
Children (<4 years): Limited data available.
Elderly (>65 years): No dose adjustment required.
Pregnancy/Lactation: Use only if clearly needed; excreted in animal milk.
✔️ How to Use Onstar ODT
- Tear the pouch along the marked edge.
- Place the film on the tongue — it dissolves within 20 seconds.
- Do not chew or swallow the film whole.
- Swallow the dissolved medication with or without water.
- Wash hands after use.
✔️ Precautions & Warnings
Use cautiously in patients with hepatic impairment (maximum 8 mg/day).
Not a substitute for gastric suction in cases of gastrointestinal obstruction.
May mask symptoms of ileus or gastric distension post-surgery.
✔️ Storage:
Store below 30°C, in a dry place, protected from light and moisture.
