How does Ambroxol Syrup work?

Ambroxol Syrup thins and loosens mucous (phlegm) in the airways making it easier to cough out. Thus, it promotes mucous clearance and eases a productive cough (cough with mucous).

Indication

• Ambroxol Syrup is used for treating short-duration as well as long-standing diseases of the respiratory tract which are associated with abnormal bronchial secretions.
• It is also used to treat acute attacks of chronic bronchitis in which there is inflammation of the windpipe (bronchi) leading to a long-standing cough and difficulty in breathing.
• It can also be used in the management of asthmatic bronchitis and asthma along with other medications to ease coughing out of the sputum.
• It can also be used to ease coughing out of sputum in case of bronchiectasis in which there is breathing difficulty and long-standing cough formation due to the collapse of lung tissue.
• It is also used to ease coughing out of sputum in various infectious conditions like pneumonia, middle ear infection, infection of a paranasal sinus, and infection of the nasopharynx. Pharmacology

Bromhexine has an active metabolite called ambroxol, which is more potent in its bronchosecretolytic action compared to bromhexine. Ambroxol improves the consistency of sputum by hydrating it, making it easier to expectorate and reducing shortness of breath. It also enhances the production of surfactant phospholipids in alveolar cells, leading to decreased alveolar surface tension. Additionally, ambroxol reduces bronchial hyperactivity and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the generation of cellular cytokines and arachidonic acid metabolites. It has been effective in improving airway patency in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Dosage & Administration of Ambroxol Syrup

Syrup Dosage:

• Children aged 2-5 years: 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoonful) 2-3 times a day.
• Children aged 5-10 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoonful) 2-3 times a day.
• Children above 10 years and adults: 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) 3 times a day.

Take Ambroxol Syrup as advised by your physician. Shake well before use. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight, and disease condition.

Interaction

• Ambroxol Syrup may interact with other medicines, so it's important to discuss all the medicines, supplements, or herbal preparations you are taking with your doctor. Inform your doctor if you have a planned surgery or vaccination schedule.
• Using medicines to treat cough or cold (cough suppressants) along with Ambroxol Syrup may affect the removal of liquified mucus by inhibiting coughing and causing congestion (stuffy nose).
• Concomitant use of certain antibiotics like Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, and Erythromycin with Ambroxol Syrup may increase their concentrations in the sputum.
• There is no known interaction of Ambroxol Syrup with any particular food. However, it's advised to avoid spicy, cold, and oily foodstuffs to prevent irritation to the throat.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Ambolin 100 ml Syrup has been found to have no teratogenic or fetal toxicity in tests. However, it is not recommended for use during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. The safety of using Ambolin syrup during lactation is yet to be determined. It's essential to consult with a healthcare professional before using Ambolin syrup if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

• If you have allergies to certain sugars, inform your doctor as Ambroxol Syrup may contain sorbitol.
