Pizofen TS 1.5 contains pizotifen, a serotonin antagonist with antihistamine and weak antimuscarinic properties. It helps prevent migraine by blocking the effects of serotonin and tryptamine, reducing the changes in blood vessel tone associated with migraine headaches.
Adults: For migraine prevention, treatment may begin with a low dose such as 0.5 mg daily and gradually increase according to response. A maintenance dose of 1.5 mg daily may be taken as a single nighttime dose or in divided doses. The maximum recommended daily dose may be up to 4.5 mg under medical supervision.
Children: In children over 2 years, treatment may start at 0.5 mg daily and may be gradually increased according to the physician's advice.
Dose adjustments may be required in patients with kidney or liver impairment.
Pizofen may increase the sedative effects of alcohol and other central nervous system (CNS) depressants. Its antimuscarinic effects may also become stronger when combined with other antimuscarinic medicines.
It may potentially mask warning symptoms associated with certain ototoxic medicines, such as aminoglycoside antibiotics. Inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking.
Pizotifen should not be used in premature infants or neonates and should be avoided in patients with known hypersensitivity to the medicine. Caution is required in conditions such as angle-closure glaucoma, urinary retention, and epilepsy.
Indication: Migraine and headache prevention
Administration: Oral; with or without food
Therapeutic class: Migraine prophylactic/serotonin antagonist
Pizofen TS 1.5 may cause significant drowsiness, particularly when treatment is started. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.
Patients with glaucoma, urinary retention, epilepsy, kidney disease, or liver disease should inform their doctor before treatment. Long-term therapy may require monitoring of liver function and body weight.
Contact your doctor if you experience a skin rash, muscle pain, tremors, difficulty moving, or unusual involuntary movements.
Alcohol should be avoided because it may increase the sedative effects of the medicine.
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
