How Ursocol 300mg Tablet works?

By improving bile flow through the liver and preserving liver cells, Ursocol 300mg Tablet helps to reduce elevated liver enzyme levels. Ursocol 300mg Tablet is a bile concentrate that reduces biliary cholesterol by blocking the synthesis of new cholesterol through intestinal absorption. Lowering cholesterol levels progressively solubilizes cholesterol from gallstones, resulting in their disintegration.

Indication of Ursocol 300mg Tablet

Ursodeoxycholic Acid helps to treat

  • Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC)
  • Gallstones (not visible on X-ray in patients with a functioning gall bladder)
  • Liver disease associated with cystic fibrosis in children aged 6 to 18 years
Pharmacology

A naturally occurring bile acid called ursodeoxycholic acid is used to treat a number of hepatobiliary conditions. The action of ursodeoxycholic acid is based on a decrease in bile cholesterol synthesis. By lowering dietary cholesterol absorption, reducing hepatic cholesterol production, and not impairing bile acid synthesis, ursodeoxycholic acid achieves this.

Bile's composition shifts from supersaturated to unsaturated as a result. Because it encourages the growth of liquid cholesterol crystal complexes, ursodeoxycholic acid also facilitates the movement of cholesterol from the gallbladder into the intestine for excretion.

  • Cholangiocytes are shielded from the cytotoxicity of hydrophobic bile acid by ursodeoxycholic acid, which aids in the treatment of cholestatic liver disease.
  • Hepatobiliary secretion stimulation
  • Bile acid does not cause apoptosis in hepatocytes.

Ursodeoxycholic acid is completely absorbed in the upper gut. Between 30 and 150 minutes pass before serum concentration reaches its maximum. The percentage of absorption varies from 60% to 80%. After absorption, ursodeoxycholic acid travels to the portal vein where it is taken up by the liver, conjugated with an amino acid (glycine or taurine), and then released into the hepatic bile ducts. Ursodeoxycholic acid is present in very small amounts in the blood and is only slightly excreted in the urine. The biological half-life of ursodeoxycholic acid ranges from 3.5 to 5.8 days.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Ursocol 300 Tablet is generally regarded as a safe and effective medication. This medication, however, may cause certain typical adverse effects, such as diarrhea. If you get diarrhea, your doctor may lower the dose, and if it persists, your therapy may be stopped. Furthermore, using this medication as a long-term therapy may have an effect on your liver enzyme levels. Your doctor will periodically evaluate your liver enzyme levels to keep an eye on this. Despite these modest adverse effects, this medication is seen to be a suitable alternative to surgery in certain gallstones patients.

Ursocol 300 Tablet works on the liver and is concentrated in bile released by the liver. As a result, the liver's production and release of cholesterol is suppressed, resulting in lower cholesterol levels in bile. This medication also prevents the intestines from absorbing bile salts and cholesterol. As a result of the lower cholesterol saturation in bile from the liver, cholesterol from gallstones gradually dissolve, resulting in a reduction in size and final disintegration. It also lowers increased liver enzyme levels by boosting bile flow through the liver, so preserving liver cells.

Avoid using an antacid preparation without first seeing your doctor, since they reduce the efficacy of Ursocol 300 Tablet. You should also avoid taking cholestyramine or colestipol since they interfere with the efficiency of Ursocol 300 Tablet. So, consult your doctor about the time interval between Ursocol 300 Tablet and these medications. Also, avoid taking oral contraceptives, estrogenic hormones, and blood cholesterol-lowering agents such as clofibrate, as these may increase the likelihood of developing gallstones and work in the opposite direction of the Ursocol 300 Tablet.

The time taken for Ursodeoxycholic Acid to show its effect is variable and depends on stone size and composition. It may start showing its effect after six to 24 months after the administration.

Depending on your health, the best time to take this medication may change. Your doctor may advise you to take 2 to 3 doses each day, with the last dosage taken at bedtime. Ursocol 300 Tablet should be taken with water or milk and with or after meals. When recommended to dissolve gallstones, it is normally advised to take it once a day at night. It should ideally be taken every 6 hours, for example, at 8 a.m., 2 p.m., and 8 p.m.

Do not stop taking Ursocol 300 Tablet unless advised by your doctor. Your doctor might advise you on how long you should continue to take Ursocol 300 Tablet. From time to time, you will need to consult your doctor to review your treatment and assess your symptoms.
