How does Zithrin 500 mg Tablet work?

Zithrin 500 mg Tablet slows the growth or sometimes kills the harmful bacteria by preventing the production of proteins required by the bacteria for its survival.

Quick Suggestions:

• Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection come back and harder to treat.
• Take it 1 hour before or two hours after food.
• Do not take antacids 2 hours before or after taking Zithrin 500mg Tablet.
• Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it doesn't stop or if you find blood in your stools.
• Include more fiber-enriched food in your diet, as it can be easily digested by gut bacteria which helps stimulate their growth. Thus fiber foods may help restore healthy gut bacteria after taking a course of antibiotics. Whole grains like whole-grain bread, and brown rice, should be included in your diet.
• Avoid taking too many calcium-enriched foods and drinks as it might affect the working of Zithrin 500mg Tablet.
• Stop taking Zithrin 500mg Tablet and inform your doctor immediately if you develop an itchy rash, swelling of the face, throat, or tongue, or breathing difficulties while taking it.

Indication of Zithrin 500mg Tablet

• Zithrin 500mg Tablet belongs to a group of medicines called Macrolide antibiotics, and it is used to treat mild to moderate bacterial infections caused by various micro-organisms. These infections include chest, throat, and nasal infections like bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, sore throat, and sinusitis.
• The medicine is also used to treat ear infections and skin & soft tissue infections like abscesses and boils. In addition, it is indicated for the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases such as cervicitis caused by organisms such as Chlamydia trachomatis/ Neisseria gonorrhea in affected individuals.

Pharmacology

Since azithromycin is acid-stable, it can be taken orally without needing gastric acid protection. It is easily absorbed, and on an empty stomach, it is absorbed more fully.

Zithrin 500 mg Tablet Dosage & Administration

Adult:

• Orally take 500 mg once a day for three days or 250 mg once a day for four days, starting with 250 mg on day one.
• For Chlamydia trachomatis-related STIs in adults, the recommended dosage is 1 gm given as a single dose, or 500 mg once on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily for the following 2 days.

Children:

• For children over 6 months, 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days
• If your weight is between 15 and 25 kilograms, take 200 mg daily for three days.
• For three days, take 300 mg (112 teaspoonfuls) if your body weight is between 26 and 35 kg and 400 mg (2 teaspoonfuls) if it's between 36 and 45 kg.
• Typhoid fever is treated with 500 mg (212 teaspoons) once daily for 7–10 days.

Interaction

Food and antacids decrease the absorption of azithromycin. Azithromycin should be avoided in patients receiving ergot alkaloids due to the risk of ergotism from its interaction with the cytochrome P-450 system. When administering digoxin and cyclosporin at the same time, care should be taken because macrolides raise their plasma concentrations. It has not been reported that Azithromycin and Warfarin, Theophylline, Carbamazepine, Methylprednisolone, or Cimetidine interact negatively.

Contraindications

Patients who are hypersensitive to azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic should not take Zithromax 500 mg tablets. Ergot derivatives and azithromycin should not be administered together. Patients with hepatic conditions should not take Zithromax 500 mg tablet.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Azithromycin falls under Category B for pregnancy. Studies on animal reproduction have shown that azithromycin poses no risk to the developing fetus. Pregnant women have not been the subject of adequate or carefully regulated studies. Zithrin 500 mg Tablet should only be used during pregnancy if no other suitable options are available, as studies on animal reproduction are not always indicative of human response. Whether azithromycin is secreted in breast milk is unknown. Therefore, care should be taken when giving Zithrin 500 mg Tablet to nursing mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

• Before taking Zithrin 500 mg Tablet, inform your doctor if you have liver problems, muscle problems, heart rhythm disorder, or electrolyte imbalance.
• In rare cases, it may cause diarrhea, so if you experience watery or bloody diarrhea, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor.
• Do not take any anti-diarrheal medicine unless advised by your doctor.
• The effect of Zithrin 500 mg Tablet on pregnancy is unknown, so consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning for pregnancy, or breastfeeding before using it.
• If you are allergic to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, do not take Zithrin 500 mg Tablet. Inform your doctor if you are taking cholesterol-lowering drugs, anti-gout or anti-arthritis drugs, or medicine for treating overactive bladder.
• Zithrin 500 mg Tablet is not recommended for patients with pneumonia who are too ill or have risk factors for oral therapy.
