✔️ Indication of Odaz Powder for Suspension

Bacterial infections, bacterial endocarditis, typhoid fever, pneumonia, gonorrhea, sinusitis, otitis media, UTI, PID, non-gonococcal urethritis, chancroid, salmonellosis, cervicitis, babesiosis, chlamydial infections.

✔️ Pharmacology

• Azithromycin is stable to acid, allowing oral administration without protecting stomach acid.
• Easily absorbed with greater absorption on an empty stomach.
• The time for adults to reach maximum concentration is 2.1 to 3.2 hours for oral dosage forms.
• Azithromycin is actively transported to the site of infection due to high concentrations in phagocytes.
• High concentrations are released during active phagocytosis, and tissue concentration can be 50 times higher than in plasma.
• The extended terminal half-life is due to massive absorption and subsequent release of the drug from the tissue.
• Bile excretion of azithromycin is the main route of elimination, with approximately 6% appearing as the parent drug in urine over a week.
• Microbiology: Azithromycin works by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, interfering with microbial protein synthesis.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Odaz Powder for Suspension

• Adults: 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days or 500 mg once on day 1, followed by 250 mg once on days 2-5 for 4 days.
• For sexually transmitted diseases caused by Chlamydia trachomatis in adults: 1 gm as a single dose or 500 mg once on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily for the next 2 days.
• Children (over 6 months): 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days.
• Typhoid fever: 500 mg once daily for 7-10 days.

Reconstitution procedure of suspension:

1. Shake the bottle well to loosen the powder.
2. Add boiled and cooled water up to the watermark of the bottle label.
3. Shake until the powder is completely mixed with water.
4. Azithromycin should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

• Absorption is reduced in the presence of food or antacids.
• Avoid ergot alkaloids to prevent ergotism.
• Caution with digoxin and cyclosporin due to raised plasma concentrations.
• No significant interaction with Warfarin, Theophylline, Carbamazepine, Methylprednisolone, or Cimetidine.

• Pregnancy Category B. Caution advised during pregnancy; use only if no other options are available.
• Not known to be secreted in breast milk; caution is recommended during lactation.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Monitor for signs of superinfection with non-susceptible organisms.
• Monitor liver function tests and CBC with differential.
• No dose adjustment is needed in patients with renal impairment.
