✔️ Side Effects
Common: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and indigestion
Serious (rare): Pseudomembranous colitis, hypersensitivity reactions, rash, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia
✔️ Mechanism of Action
Cefixime disrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), halting peptidoglycan formation and leading to cell death.
✔️ Drug Interactions
Probenecid: May raise cefixime blood levels
Oral anticoagulants: May increase bleeding risk via prolonged prothrombin time
✔️ Dosage & Administration
Adults: 200–400 mg daily as a single or divided dose
Children >6 months: 8 mg/kg/day in 1–2 divided doses
Typhoid fever: 15–20 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses (max 400 mg/day)
Gonorrhea: Single 400 mg dose
Renal impairment: Max 200 mg/day if CrCl <20 mL/min
May be taken with or without food. Maintain regular dosing intervals.
