Aristomox 500 contains amoxicillin, a penicillin-type broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by preventing susceptible bacteria from forming their protective cell wall, ultimately causing bacterial death.
It may be used for infections of the ear, nose and throat, respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and certain gastrointestinal infections. Amoxicillin may also be used in combination with other medicines to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in peptic ulcer disease and, in selected patients, to prevent infective endocarditis associated with certain dental procedures.
Amoxicillin is primarily eliminated through the kidneys, so dosage adjustment may be necessary in patients with significant renal impairment.
Patients undergoing haemodialysis may require a modified dosing schedule and an additional dose around dialysis sessions. The exact dose should be determined according to renal function and the treating physician's advice.
Seek immediate medical attention if you develop difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe skin rash, or persistent/bloody diarrhea.
The usual adult dose varies according to the infection. Common regimens may include 250–500 mg every 8 hours or other schedules prescribed according to the infection and clinical response.
Higher doses may be required for certain severe or recurrent respiratory infections or specific infections. H. pylori treatment requires amoxicillin in combination with other medicines according to the prescribed eradication regimen.
For prevention of infective endocarditis, a single high dose before an appropriate dental procedure may be prescribed for selected high-risk patients.
Specific infections such as gonorrhoea, dental infections or urinary infections may require different dosing regimens. Treatment should therefore follow the doctor's prescription rather than a fixed dose.
Children require weight-based dosing. The appropriate dose depends on age, body weight, infection and its severity. Higher doses may be used for certain infections such as acute otitis media when clinically appropriate.
Do not give Aristomox 500 to a child unless the strength and dose have been specifically prescribed.
Amoxicillin is generally considered compatible with pregnancy when clinically indicated and prescribed by a doctor.
Amoxicillin passes into breast milk in small amounts. It is generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but infants should be monitored for diarrhea, rash, or other unusual symptoms.
Keep in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
