Ticagrelor blocks the P2Y12 receptor on platelets, preventing them from clumping together and forming blood clots. By reducing platelet activation and aggregation, it helps maintain blood flow through arteries and lowers the risk of clot-related cardiovascular events.

The most frequently reported side effects include:

• Bleeding
• Shortness of breath (dyspnea)

• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Diarrhea

• Low blood pressure

Most bleeding episodes are mild, although bleeding may take longer than usual to stop.

Serious Side Effects

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

• Severe or persistent bleeding
• Blood in urine or stool
• Vomiting blood
• Intracranial bleeding symptoms
• Severe allergic reactions, including angioedema
• Significant breathing difficulties
• Fainting or severe dizziness

Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)

• Initial loading dose: 180 mg (two 90 mg tablets)
• Maintenance dose: 90 mg twice daily for up to 12 months

Patients with Previous Heart Attack

• Recommended dose: 60 mg twice daily for extended therapy

Important Administration Instructions

• Can be taken with or without food.
• Should be taken at the same times each day.
• Must be used together with low-dose aspirin (75–150 mg daily), unless contraindicated.
• Do not exceed 100 mg of daily aspirin during ticagrelor treatment unless specifically instructed by a physician.

The following strong CYP3A4 inhibitors should generally be avoided:

Strong CYP3A inducers may decrease ticagrelor effectiveness:

• Rifampicin
• Phenytoin
• Carbamazepine
• Phenobarbital
• Dexamethasone

• Aspirin
• Heparin
• Enoxaparin
• Warfarin
• Other anticoagulants

Other Notable Interactions

• Digoxin
• Cyclosporine
• Simvastatin doses above 40 mg
• Lovastatin
• Certain antiarrhythmic and cardiovascular medications
