Dexlansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces gastric acid secretion by selectively blocking the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme in the stomach's parietal cells. By inhibiting this proton pump, it suppresses the final stage of gastric acid production.
Dexlansoprazole is the R-enantiomer of lansoprazole and is formulated using a Dual Delayed Release (DDR) system. The capsule contains two types of enteric-coated granules that dissolve at different pH levels, producing two separate peaks in blood concentration. The first peak generally occurs within 1–2 hours, followed by a second peak around 4–5 hours after administration. Dexlansoprazole is extensively metabolized in the liver, with its metabolites primarily eliminated through urine.
