Coenzyme Q10, also known as Ubidecarenone, is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like compound present in all body cells. It plays a crucial role in mitochondrial electron transport, facilitating cellular respiration and ATP (energy) production.
Higher concentrations are found in metabolically active tissues such as the heart, skeletal muscles, liver, kidneys, immune system, and brain. Natural production declines with age, contributing to aging-related conditions.
Being lipophilic, Coenzyme Q10 is better absorbed when taken with fatty meals. After oral administration, it is absorbed in the small intestine, transported via the lymphatic system to the liver, incorporated into lipoproteins, and distributed throughout the body—including the brain.
It is metabolized in all tissues, with approximately 60% excreted in feces, primarily via bile.
