Topical corticosteroids have anti-inflammatory, anti-itching, and vasoconstrictive effects. They are believed to work by stimulating the production of proteins known as lipocortins, which inhibit phospholipase A2. This action reduces the release of arachidonic acid from cell membranes, helping limit the production of inflammatory substances such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.

Eczacort is a topical corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation, itching, and other symptoms of skin conditions that respond to corticosteroid treatment in adults. It is also indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis in children aged 3 months to 18 years.
- Adults: Apply a thin layer to the affected skin two or three times daily, depending on the severity of the condition. Gently rub it into the skin.
- Children aged 3 months to 18 years: For atopic dermatitis, apply a thin layer to the affected areas twice daily and rub in gently.
Stop treatment once the condition is adequately controlled. If there is no improvement within two weeks, consult a physician for reassessment. Treatment beyond two weeks should be continued only after evaluating the potential benefits and risks. Use for more than four weeks has not been established as safe and effective.
Avoid applying hydrocortisone butyrate to the diaper area unless specifically instructed by a physician. Do not cover treated skin with airtight or occlusive dressings unless advised by a doctor. Diapers and plastic pants may also trap moisture and act as occlusive coverings.
- Pediatric use: Safety and effectiveness in children younger than 3 months have not been established.
- Geriatric use: Safety and effectiveness in patients over 65 years of age have not been established.
No specific drug interactions with Eczacort are currently known. However, inform your doctor about any other medicines or topical products you are using.
Patients with a known hypersensitivity to hydrocortisone butyrate or any other ingredient in the formulation should not use Eczacort.
Mild side effects may occur when treatment begins, including stinging, burning, itching, irritation, dryness, or redness at the application site. These symptoms may subside as the skin adjusts to the medicine. If irritation persists or worsens, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.
Pregnancy: Adequate, well-controlled studies in pregnant women are not available. Eczacort should therefore be used during pregnancy only when the expected benefit outweighs the potential risk to the developing baby. Corticosteroids have caused developmental abnormalities in animal studies under certain conditions.
Lactation: It is not known whether topical corticosteroids are absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce detectable levels in breast milk. Although systemically administered corticosteroids can pass into breast milk, caution is recommended when using topical corticosteroids while breastfeeding. Seek medical advice before use.
Absorption of topical corticosteroids through the skin may occasionally affect the body's hormonal system, causing reversible suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In some cases, systemic effects such as Cushing's syndrome, elevated blood glucose, and glucose in the urine have been reported.
The risk of systemic absorption increases when stronger corticosteroids are used, when the medicine is applied to large areas of skin, when treatment is prolonged, or when the treated area is covered with an occlusive dressing. Children may absorb proportionally larger amounts and are more vulnerable to systemic side effects.
If skin irritation occurs, stop using the medicine and seek appropriate treatment. If a skin infection is present, suitable antifungal or antibacterial treatment may be necessary. If the condition does not improve promptly, corticosteroid treatment should be stopped until the infection is adequately controlled.
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Protect from light and do not freeze. Keep the medicine out of the reach of children.
