Recodep contains Amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant, and Chlordiazepoxide, an anxiolytic.
Common side effects related to depression symptoms include anorexia, fatigue, weakness, restlessness, and lethargy. More specific side effects reported include:
The optimal dose depends on the severity of the symptoms and the patient’s response. Once a satisfactory response is achieved, the dosage should be reduced to the minimum required to maintain remission. The majority of the total daily dose is usually taken at bedtime. For some patients, a single bedtime dose may be sufficient. A typical starting dosage is 3 to 4 tablets per day, divided into doses, or as directed by a physician.
Due to the Amitriptyline component, Recodep may reduce the antihypertensive effects of guanethidine or similar medications.
Recodep should not be used by individuals who are hypersensitive to benzodiazepines or tricyclic antidepressants. It is also contraindicated for patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
For elderly and debilitated patients, the dosage should be limited to the lowest effective amount to avoid the risks of ataxia, excessive sedation, confusion, and anticholinergic effects.
Overdose Effects
Overdosing on Recodep can be fatal. Amitriptyline overdose may result in severe manifestations such as cardiac arrhythmias, hypotension, convulsions, and CNS depression, including coma. Benzodiazepine overdose can cause somnolence, confusion, coma, and reduced reflexes.
Withdrawal symptoms may occur if Chlordiazepoxide or Amitriptyline is abruptly discontinued, including convulsions, tremors, muscle cramps, vomiting, and sweating. Milder withdrawal symptoms like dysphoria and insomnia can occur with abrupt cessation of benzodiazepines used continuously for several months. Amitriptyline withdrawal can cause symptoms like nausea, headache, and malaise.
The safety of Recodep during pregnancy and lactation has not been established.
