For breast carcinoma, it modifies the action of other steroid hormones and exerts direct cytotoxic effects on tumor cells.Megestrol suppresses hormone-dependent breast cancer cells and blocks the stimulatory effects of estrogen. It works through receptor mechanisms where estrogen enters cells, binds to receptors, and alters normal cell functions. Pharmacologic doses of Megestrol reduce hormone-dependent cancer cells.Absorption: Peak plasma levels occur 2–3 hours after a single 160 mg dose.Half-life: 33–38 hours.Excretion: 66% in urine, 20% in feces.
