Arokast 10mg Tablet contains Montelukast which belongs to the group of medicines called Leukotriene Receptor Antagonists. It is used to manage the signs and symptoms of asthma and seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and in adolescents (aged 15 years or older). It can also be used to manage bronchospasm (narrowing of airways) triggered due to exercise.
Asthma is a long-term respiratory disease in which your airways become inflamed, swollen, and narrowed. It also causes excessive mucous secretion in the airways which makes it difficult for the air to pass through, leading to unpleasant symptoms like wheezing, difficulty in breathing, chest pain, and/or cough.
Seasonal allergic rhinitis (also known as hay fever) is an allergic condition triggered by to exposure various allergens (such as pollens, dust, mold, or flakes of skin from certain animals). It is often characterized by inflammation of the inner lining of nose accompanied by nasal congestion, repeated sneezing, and/or red, watery, or itchy eyes. the Arokast 10mg Tablet can only keep you from getting an asthmatic attack. It will not stop an asthma attack that has been started already. Therefore, always carry an inhaled rescue medicine with you to subside the symptoms.
Take Arokast 10mg Tablet for the duration prescribed by your doctor to achieve better control over the symptoms. Before taking Arokast 10mg Tablet inform your doctor if you are allergic to montelukast or have any pre-existing disease condition.
Avoid alcohol while taking Arokast 10.
Arokast 10mg Tablet should be used in pregnant women only if it is considered necessary by the physician. Your doctor will prescribe you Arokast 10mg Tablet after evaluating the risks and benefits of the therapy.
It is not known whether Arokast 10mg Tablet can pass through breast milk. Therefore, it should be used in breastfeeding women only if considered necessary by the physician.
Arokast 10mg Tablet usually does not affect your ability to drive or operate any machinery. However, do not drive or handle any heavy tools or machines if you feel dizzy or drowsy after taking Arokast 10mg Tablet.
Arokast 10 is safe to use in patients with kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Arokast 10 is recommended.
Arokast 10 should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. A dose adjustment of Arokast 10 may be needed. Please consult your doctor. Limited information is available on the use of Arokast 10 in these patients. No dose adjustment is recommended in patients with mild to moderate liver disease.
Montelukast, the active ingredient in Arokast 10, blocks the effects of cysteinyl leukotrienes in the airways, reducing inflammation.
It works by reducing inflammation in the airways, making breathing easier.
Montelukast is a selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist that inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1). Cysteinyl leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4), products of arachidonic acid metabolism, are released from various cells, including mast cells and eosinophils. These leukotrienes and receptor occupation are linked to asthma and allergic rhinitis pathophysiology, contributing to airway edema, smooth muscle contraction, and altered cellular activity in the inflammatory process.
Use in Pediatric Patients: Safety and efficacy are established in pediatric patients 6 months to 14 years old, similar to adults.
Hepatic Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment for mild-to-moderate hepatic insufficiency.
Renal Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment needed.
Elderly Use: Pharmacokinetics and oral bioavailability are similar in elderly and younger adults. The plasma half-life is slightly longer in the elderly, but no dosage adjustment is necessary.
Arokast can be used with other asthma therapies without increased adverse reactions. It does not significantly affect the pharmacokinetics of theophylline, prednisone, prednisolone, oral contraceptives, terfenadine, digoxin, or warfarin. It was also used with various commonly prescribed drugs, such as thyroid hormones and NSAIDs, without adverse interactions. Phenobarbital reduces Arokast's AUC by 40%, but no dosage adjustment is needed. Monitor when co-administered with potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers like phenobarbital or rifampin.
Montelukast is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any of its components.
Montelukast crosses the placenta in animal studies. There are no adequate studies in pregnant women, so use only if clearly needed. As many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution is advised when administering to nursing mothers.
Arokast is not for acute asthma attacks. Patients should have rescue medication available. Therapy can continue during acute exacerbations, but it should not replace corticosteroids abruptly. Not recommended as monotherapy for exercise-induced bronchospasm. Patients with aspirin sensitivity should avoid aspirin or NSAIDs. Arokast improves airway function in aspirin-sensitive asthmatics but does not prevent bronchoconstrictor responses to these drugs.
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
