Pharmacology

Dosage & Administration
Interaction
Folic acid therapy may speed up the metabolism of phenytoin in people who are folate-deficient. Sulfasalazine, primidone, para-aminosalicylic acid, and phenytoin can all lower serum folate levels and result in a deficit. Oral contraceptives may also decrease the metabolism of folate, causing depletion, but it's unclear whether this will result in anemia or changes to the megaloblastic follicle.
Folic acid may be counteracted by chloramphenicol when given concurrently, and dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors, such as methotrexate and trimethoprim, may prevent the body from using folic acid.
Contraindication
This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with a known history of allergy to folic acid or any other inactive ingredients present in the formulation.
