Gliclazide falls in the category of oral hypoglycemic. Diatrol 80 is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Gliclazide helps to control the blood sugar levels in the body. It activates the pancreas to secrete more insulin and also supports the body in utilizing insulin more effectively.
Gliclazide is used when other methods of treatment such as diet, weight loss, and exercise have failed to produce the desired results. The dosage of Gliclazide varies from 80 mg to 320 mg daily. If one is to take a dose more than 160 mg then the dose is divided into two equal parts. It is recommended to avoid modifying the dose without consulting the doctor. Also, in case you miss a dose, avoid taking two doses to compensate for the missed dose.
Do inform your doctor about other medications you are taking before starting a course of Gliclazide. Gliclazide also causes reactions like warmth, nausea, and flushing if one consumes alcohol. It is also recommended to follow a proper diet alongside the medication.
Do not consume alcohol while taking Diatrol 80. Taking Diatrol 80 with alcohol can cause hypoglycemia.
GLICLAZIDE is not recommended during pregnancy. Consult the doctor if you are pregnant or planning for pregnancy.
Diatrol 80 is not recommended during lactation. Consult the doctor if you are breastfeeding.
Diatrol 80 may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels). This may affect your ability to drive. Use caution while driving or doing anything that requires concentration or mental alertness.
Diatrol 80 may not be recommended for patients with severe kidney disease. Consult the doctor if you have a history of kidney diseases/conditions.
Diatrol 80 may not be recommended for patients with severe liver disease. Consult the doctor if you have a history of liver diseases/conditions.
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Gliclazide is a second-generation sulfonylurea drug with hypoglycaemic and potentially useful hematological properties. It stimulates the release of insulin from pancreatic β-cells by facilitating Ca+2 transport across the β-cell membranes and decreases hepatic glucose output.
Gliclazide stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic beta-cells, reduces insulin uptake, and glucose output by the liver, and increases insulin sensitivity at peripheral target sites. It decreases microthrombosis by partial inhibition of platelet aggregation and adhesion, and by restoring fibrinolysis with an increase in tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) activity.
