Levemir Flexpen is a long-acting insulin used to manage type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus in both adults and children. It maintains a consistent insulin level in the body throughout the day, helping to regulate blood sugar levels and prevent complications associated with diabetes. Levemir Flexpen can be prescribed alone or in combination with fast-acting insulin or other diabetes medications. Your doctor or nurse will instruct you on the correct method of injecting it under the skin. To achieve the best results, it is essential to use this medicine regularly as per the prescribed dose. Discontinuing it may lead to a significant increase in blood sugar levels, putting you at risk of severe complications. Levemir Flexpen is just one part of a comprehensive treatment plan, which should also include a healthy diet, regular exercise, and weight management as recommended by your doctor.
Avoid using this medication if your blood sugar is low (hypoglycemia). Inform your doctor if you have any history of kidney, liver, or heart issues before starting treatment. Levemir Flexpen is generally considered safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women if prescribed by a doctor.
You are recommended not to consume alcohol along with Levemir Flexpen to avoid unpleasant side effects. Alcohol may either decrease or increase the blood sugar level, which can be fatal.
Levemir Flexpen can be used during pregnancy. Your insulin dose may need to be changed during pregnancy and after delivery.
Levemir Flexpen can be given safely to nursing mothers but only under the supervision of a physician.
Drive with caution, Levemir Flexpen usually causes drowsiness and affects driving ability. Your ability to concentrate and react may be reduced if you have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
Levemir Flexpen is to be taken with caution, especially if you have a history of kidney diseases/conditions. Your doctor may have to adjust the dose.
Levemir Flexpen is to be taken with caution, especially if you have a history of Liver Problems. Your doctor may have to adjust the dose.
Diabetes mellitus (Type 1 & Type 2)
Levemir Flexpen is a long-acting insulin that provides consistent, all-day blood sugar control. It works similarly to the body's natural insulin, facilitating the absorption of sugar in muscle and fat cells and reducing sugar production in the liver.
Levemir Flexpen belongs to the category of the anti-diabetic drug indicated in the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This medicine is primarily prescribed to people whose blood sugar levels are high and are not even controlled by diet and exercise alone.
The primary activity of insulin detemir is the regulation of glucose metabolism. Insulins, including insulin detemir, exert their specific action by binding to insulin receptors. Receptor-bound insulin lowers blood glucose by facilitating cellular uptake of glucose into skeletal muscle and adipose tissue and by inhibiting the output of glucose from the liver. Insulin inhibits lipolysis in the adipocyte, inhibits proteolysis, and enhances protein synthesis.
2 years: Administer subcutaneously as approximately one-third of the total daily insulin requirement. The remainder of the daily insulin requirement should be covered by rapid-acting or short-acting insulin.
Insulin Detemir is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Insulin Detemir or any of its excipients. Reactions have included anaphylaxis
Pregnancy Category B. Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women OR Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester.
Nursing Mothers: It is unknown whether Insulin detemir is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs, including human insulin, are excreted in human milk, use caution when administering Insulin detemir to a nursing woman. Women with diabetes who are lactating may require adjustments to their insulin doses.
Opened vials or cartridges can be stored at room temperature for up to 4 weeks, while unopened vials should be kept in the refrigerator (2°C–8°C).
If refrigeration is not possible, unused Levemir Flexpen can be kept at room temperature below 30°C, away from direct heat and light. Discard the unrefrigerated Levemir Flexpen 42 days after it is first removed from the refrigerator, even if it still contains insulin.
