Pharmacology

Alatrol is a potent H1 receptor antagonist with no anticholinergic or antiserum effects. It causes almost no drowsiness and no behavioral changes at the pharmacologically active dose level. It inhibits the early stages of histamine-mediated allergic reactions and reduces inflammatory cell migration and mediator release in the late stages of allergic reactions.

Cetirizine 10 mg has a peak plasma concentration of 257 mcg/L (980 mcg/L in children) one hour after administration. Food has no effect on absorption, but it may slow it down slightly. After taking a 10 mg dose of cetirizine, the maximum blood concentration is 0.3 g/ml 30 to 60 minutes later. It has a plasma half-life of about 11 hours. The absorption of one object by another is extremely consistent. It has a renal clearance rate of 30 ml/min and an excretion half-life of about 9 hours.

Dosage of Alatrol Syrup

• Adults and children above the age of six should take one pill or two teaspoons daily. (or 1 teaspoonful twice daily).
• For children ages 2 to 6: 1 teaspoon or 1/2 teaspoon twice day.
• Children from 6 months to 2 years should consume 1/2 teaspoon each day. Children between the ages of 12 and 23 months can get a dosage increase up to a maximum of 1/2 teaspoon every 12 hours.

Contraindications

Patients with a history of allergy to cetirizine or hydroxyzine are not recommended.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• The United States FDA classifies cetirizine hydrochloride as pregnancy classification B.
• However, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies on pregnant women.
• Because animal reproduction research does not always predict human response, the drug should be used during pregnancy only when clearly necessary.
• Cetirizine hydrochloride has been shown to be excreted from human milk.
• Therefore, care should be taken when administering cetirizine hydrochloride to lactating women.

Precautions & Warnings
