Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate is prescribed in cases of zinc insufficiency and/or zinc loss. Zinc deficiency can be caused by a poor diet or poor absorption. Excessive zinc loss can occur as a result of trauma, burns, diarrhoea, and other protein-depleted circumstances. A zinc supplement is taken until clinical improvement is seen, but in cases of severe malabsorption, metabolic disorders, or zinc deficiency, it may be necessary to continue taking it.
Zinc sulphate monohydrate is a trace element that has a role in several physiological enzyme systems. Zinc is required for normal growth and health. Zinc is also necessary for sexual development and reproduction, dark vision adaption, olfactory and gustatory activity, insulin storage and release, and a number of immune responses in the host. Impaired immune function, delayed wound healing, a decreased sense of taste and smell, a reduced ability to fight infections, poor night vision, an increased risk of abortion, alopecia, mental lethargy, skin changes, and poor reproductive organ development are all possible consequences of zinc deficiency.

When a tetracycline and zinc are taken together, the absorption of both the tetracycline and the zinc may be reduced. Similarly, taking zinc and a quinolone medication at the same time may reduce the absorption of both. Zinc absorption may be reduced if penicillamine and zinc are taken together.
