The antipruritic, antiseptic, and keratolytic effects of this Scalp Ointment are modest. It is used to treat psoriasis, eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis, and dandruff, which are all scaly skin conditions of the scalp.
Antipruritic, keratoplastic, and keratolytic characteristics are all found in coal tar. It slows down excessive epidermal cell turnover and is commonly used topically in disorders including dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis, either alone or in conjunction with other medications (e.g. salicyclic acid, sulfur).
Precipitated sulfur is reduced to hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is partly done by bacteria. H2S destroys bacteria, fungi, and parasites like scabies mites (potentially including Propionibacterium acnes, which plays a role in acne).
When administered topically, salicylic acid has a strong keratolytic and antiseptic effect. By boosting endogenous hydration, it softens and destroys the stratum corneum, causing the horny layer of the skin to enlarge, soften, and finally desquamate. Salicylic acid has a caustic impact at high concentrations. It also has some antifungal and antibacterial properties.
Adults, children over 12 years and the elderly: Apply to the affected areas of the scalp and remove after one hour using warm water and shampoo. Repeat the process daily for three to seven days until control has been obtained. With mild scaliness use intermittently as necessary.
Children 6–12 years: To be used under medical supervision only.
Children under 6 years: Not recommended.
Scalp of cool tar Patients who are known to be sensitive to sulphur, salicylates, coal tar, or who have local infections should avoid using the ointment. Precautions and Warnings: If the tube membrane has already been perforated, do not use it. Wash your hands after coming into touch with your eyes.
If irritation occurs, stop using it. Consult your doctor if symptoms persist after four weeks.
Coal Ta ointment can cause skin irritation, inflammation of the hair follicles, and skin photosensitivity in rare cases.
To be used at the physician's discretion.
