Pharmacology

Naphazoline is a sympathomimetic amine that belongs to the imidazoline derivative class, and it causes vasoconstriction by activating alpha-adrenergic receptors found in the arterioles of the conjunctiva and nasal mucosa. Zinc sulfate, on the other hand, acts as an astringent due to the presence of zinc ions, which have tissue-sealing and antiseptic properties. When combined, naphazoline and zinc sulfate work together to reduce conjunctival irritation and edema by constricting blood vessels. This is achieved by naphazoline binding to a-adrenergic receptor sites directly on unstriated muscle cells in blood arteries.

Dosage of Nazin Eye Drops

Adults: 1 drop in the conjunctival sac, three to 4 times per day.

Children: Naphazoline nitrate and Zinc sulfate drops have not been studied in children. Generally, in children, the dosage of vasoconstrictors should be low and selected with caution.
