Description:

  • Nausea is often a precursor to vomiting, as it is a sensation that typically precedes the act of vomiting. Nausea can be caused by a variety of factors, including motion sickness, certain medications, infections, and pregnancy. Vomiting, on the other hand, is a reflex action that is triggered by the brain and the muscles in the digestive tract in response to various stimuli such as food poisoning, infections, and illnesses. It is the body's way of getting rid of harmful substances or irritants in the stomach or intestines.
  • Emistat Oral Solution is a medication that contains Ondansetron, which belongs to the class of drugs known as antiemetics. It is used in children to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery.
  • Before administering Emistat Oral Solution to your child, it is important to inform your doctor if your child has a history of severe constipation, heart problems, liver or kidney problems, electrolyte imbalances, or is scheduled for any surgery. During treatment, the doctor will monitor your child's health regularly to minimize the risk of side effects.
  • The dosage and duration of treatment with Emistat Oral Solution will be determined by the doctor based on your child's age, body weight, and medical history. It is important to follow the prescribed dose, timing, and duration of the medication as directed by the doctor.
  • Some minor and temporary side effects may occur after taking Emistat Oral Solution, such as headache, flushing, and constipation. These side effects generally go away once the child's body adjusts to the medication. However, if your child experiences prolonged or bothersome side effects, it is important to consult the doctor immediately.
  • Be sure to inform the doctor of your child's complete medical history, including any allergies or previous reactions to medications.

Indications of Emistat Oral Solution

  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with highly emetogenic cancer chemotherapy
  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with radiotherapy
  • Prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting
Pharmacology

Emistat 4 may be a potent and intensely focused 5HT3 receptor antagonist. Its precise mechanism of operation under the influence of illness and heaving is unknown. By acting on vagal afferents via 5HT3 receptors, chemotherapeutic agents and radiotherapy may trigger the release of 5HT within the small intestine, initiating a spewing reflex. Ondansetron prevents this response from activating. The activation of vagal afferents may also release 5HT into the zone postrema, which is located on the floor of the fourth ventricle, which may further exacerbate emesis through a central mechanism. In this sense, the effect of ondansetron in the treatment of illness and the vomiting induced by cytotoxic chemotherapy and radiotherapy is probably caused by the antagonistic nature of 5HT3 receptors on neurons present in both the peripheral and central nervous systems. Although the mechanisms causing post-operative nausea and heaving are unknown, there may be shared pathways with cytotoxically induced illness and heaving.

Dosage & Administration of Emistat Oral Solution
  • For the treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, the recommended dose of Ondansetron Oral Solution for adults, geriatric patients, and children 12 years of age and older is 30 ml (24 mg) 30 minutes before the start of highly emetogenic chemotherapy and 10 ml (8 mg) 30 minutes before the start of moderately emetogenic chemotherapy. An additional 10 ml dose should be given 8 hours after the first dose, followed by one 10 ml dose twice a day (every 12 hours) for 1-2 days after completion of chemotherapy. For pediatric patients (4-11 years), the recommended dose is 5 ml (4 mg) 30 minutes before the start of chemotherapy, with two additional doses given 4 and 8 hours after the first dose, followed by 5 ml of the oral solution administered three times a day (every 8 hours) for 1-2 days after completion of chemotherapy.
  • For radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, the recommended dose of Ondansetron Oral Solution for adults, geriatric patients, and children 12 years of age and older is 10 ml (8 mg) three times daily. For total body radiation, 10 ml (8 mg) should be given 1 to 2 hours before each daily radiation session. For single high-dose radiation to the abdomen, one 10 ml dose should be given 1 to 2 hours before radiation, with subsequent doses every 8 hours after the first dose for 1-2 days after completion of radiation. For daily fractionated radiation to the abdomen, 10 ml (8 mg) should be given 1 to 2 hours before radiation, with subsequent doses every 8 hours after the first dose for each day radiation is given.
  • For postoperative nausea and vomiting, the recommended dose of Ondansetron Oral Solution for adults, geriatric patients, and children 12 years of age and older is 20 ml (16 mg) given 1 hour before anesthesia.

Give this Emistat Oral solution to your kid exactly as directed by your doctor. Shake vigorously before using. It is intended for use by children. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your child's age, weight, and medical condition.

Interaction

Tramadol's analgesic effect may be reduced. Rifampicin and other CYP3A4 inducers may reduce ondansetron levels/effects. Concurrent use of QT-prolonging agents (e.g., antiarrhythmics) may result in additive QT interval prolongation. Cardiotoxic drugs may increase the risk of arrhythmias (e.g. anthracyclines). Potentially lethal: May increase apomorphine's hypotensive effect.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients known to have extreme touchiness to the medication or any of its components. Concomitant utilization of apomorphine.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category B. Ondansetron is excreted within the breast milk of rats. It isn't known whether ondansetron is excreted in a human drain. Since numerous drugs are excreted in the human brain, caution ought to be worked out when ondansetron is managed by a nursing lady.

Precautions & Warnings

Touchiness responses, counting anaphylaxis and bronchospasm, have been detailed with or without known touchiness to other particular 5-HT3 receptor enemies. QT prolongation happens in a dose-dependent way.

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool and dry put below 30ºC. Secure from light. Keep out of reach of children.
