✅ Description:
Ondason oral soluble film is designed to dissolve on the tongue within 20 seconds, after which it is swallowed with saliva—no water is needed. The active ingredient, Ondason base, is the racemic form of Ondason and acts by selectively blocking serotonin 5-HT3 receptors. The chemical formula is C18H19N3O, with a molecular weight of 293.3.
Ondansetron is a potent and highly selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. While the exact mechanism in controlling nausea and vomiting is not fully understood, chemotherapy and radiotherapy can release serotonin (5-HT) in the small intestine, activating vagal nerves via 5-HT3 receptors and triggering the vomiting reflex. Ondansetron blocks these receptors both in the gut and in the central nervous system, preventing this reflex.

Common: Headache, constipation, diarrhea.
Less common: Rash (~1% in CINV), flushing, warmth, hiccups, elevated liver enzymes.
Rare: Anaphylaxis, bronchospasm, tachycardia, angina, hypokalemia, shortness of breath, oculogyric crisis.
✔️ 8 mg tablet/orodispersible tablet:
1–2 hours before radiotherapy, then every 8 hours for up to 5 days.
Renal impairment: No adjustment needed.
Hepatic impairment: Max single daily dose—8 mg (infused over 15 min).
<4 years: Limited data.
Elderly: No adjustment needed.
Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea & Vomiting (CINV)
Adults & pediatric (6 months–18 years):
8 mg or 4 mg orodispersible tablet: 3 doses of 0.15 mg/kg (max 16 mg each).
✔️ Drug Interactions
Ondason does not induce or inhibit liver cytochrome P-450 enzymes but is metabolized by them. Drugs that affect these enzymes may alter Ondason clearance, though no dosage adjustment is generally necessary.
✔️ Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to Ondason or its components.
Concomitant use with apomorphine.
✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation
Animal studies show no harm to fertility or fetus. No adequate human studies. Caution in nursing women—drug is excreted in animal breast milk.
✔️ Precautions & Warnings
Hypersensitivity may occur in patients sensitive to other 5-HT3 antagonists.
Not a substitute for gastric suction.
May mask progressive ileus or gastric distension after abdominal surgery or chemo.
✔️ Storage:
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture.
