✅ Description:
Nitroren SR 2.6 is an antibiotic prescribed for the treatment and prevention of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by susceptible bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli, Enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, and certain Klebsiella and Enterobacter species.
Nitrofurantoin works by interfering with bacterial enzymes and ribosomal proteins, ultimately inhibiting vital bacterial processes, leading to cell death. It is highly concentrated in urine, which enhances its effectiveness in treating UTIs.

- Adults (Treatment of Acute UTI): 100 mg every 12 hours for 7 days
- Surgical Prophylaxis: 100 mg twice daily on the day of the procedure and for 3 days after
- Take with food or milk to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset.
- Do not skip doses; complete the full course even if symptoms improve early.
- Not recommended for children under 12 years. Pediatric suspension formulations are available for younger age groups with appropriate dosing.
✔️ Drug Interactions
Probenecid and sulfinpyrazone can reduce renal excretion of nitrofurantoin, increasing its toxicity.
Antacids (especially those with magnesium trisilicate) can reduce drug absorption.
✔️ Overdose Management
Overdose may cause nausea and vomiting. Symptomatic treatment such as induced emesis may be considered. Seek medical attention immediately.

- Known allergy to nitrofurantoin
- Significant kidney or liver impairment
- Last trimester of pregnancy (38–42 weeks)
- During labor and delivery
- Infants under 1 month of age
✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy: Category B – Use only if necessary and prescribed by a physician.
- Lactation: Small amounts are excreted in breast milk. Avoid use in nursing infants under 1 month.
✔️ Precautions & Warnings
- Use cautiously in patients with diabetes, anemia, electrolyte imbalances, or vitamin B deficiency
- Avoid if you have a history of lung, liver, or kidney problems
- May cause pulmonary reactions (discontinue if suspected)
- Avoid antacids containing magnesium trisilicate while on treatment
