Carisoprodol acts as an indirect agonist of the GABA-A receptor, enhancing chloride ion conductance in the central nervous system. This results in sedative, anxiolytic, and muscle-relaxant effects. Its active metabolite, meprobamate, contributes to its calming and muscle-relaxing properties. Carisoprodol works centrally by interrupting nerve signals between the brain/spinal cord and muscles, thereby relieving muscle spasms. It does not act directly on skeletal muscle fibers.

Adults (18+ years):
250–350 mg orally, three times a day and at bedtime.

Maximum recommended treatment duration: 2 to 3 weeks

Special Populations:
Use cautiously in individuals with hepatic or renal impairment or reduced CYP2C19 enzyme activity.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category C: Use only if clearly needed.

May cause reduced milk production or infant sedation when used by breastfeeding mothers. Exercise caution.

✔️ Overdose Management

Cariso overdose may cause profound CNS depression, coma, respiratory failure, hypotension, and seizures.
Do NOT induce vomiting due to sedation risk.
Consider gastric lavage within 1 hour of ingestion.
Supportive care includes fluid resuscitation, vasopressors, and airway management (including intubation if needed).
Seizures should be managed with IV benzodiazepines; if persistent, phenobarbital may be considered.
