Indications
Xylometazoline is indicated in
- Nasal congestion in case of colds, rhinitis, sinusitis, headache.
- Tubal occlusion and otitis media associated with nasal congestion
Pharmacology
Nasal congestion of various etiologies, such as rhinosinusitis and allergic or nonallergic rhinitis, leads to obstruction of the venous sinuses lining the nasal mucosa. Activation of αadrenergic receptors leads to vasoconstriction of blood vessels in the nasal mucosa and resumption of nasal airflow. Like most expressed in the human nasal mucosa, the 1A and α2Badreno receptors may play the most important role in vasoconstriction of the human nasal mucosa. Xylometazoline is a more selective agonist of the 2Badreno receptors, with affinity for the α1A, α2A, α2C, α1B and α1Dadreno receptors. Xylometazoline reduces nasal resistance during expiration and exhalation, while increasing nasal airflow. Compared to oxymetazoline, another imidazoline-based decongestant, xylometazoline begins to act slightly faster although it has a similar duration of action. In one study, subjects with nasal congestion reported relief from ear and throat pain in addition to nasal decongestant: Oxymetazoline was assumed to mediate this effect by causing vasoconstriction of the nasal mucosa containing the sinuses. venous and nasal decongestants allow you to breathe through your nose, helping to relieve sore throat caused by mouth breathing that dries up and irritates your throat.
Dosage & Administration
Adult: 0.1%: 2 or 3 drops of droplets in each of two to three nostrils in each nasal pit. 0.1% xylometazoline should not be used for children under 12 years old.
Children from 6 to 12 years old: Xilometoline 0.05%: 2 to 3 drops on each nostril 2-3 drops. Children under 6 years old: Xilometazolina 0.05%: 2 to 3 times a day, 0.05% falls on each nostril.
Baby Less than 3 months: It is not used for babies under 3 months.
Contraindications
Xylose oxazoline nasal drops should not be used for patients undergoing transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or exposure of the dura mater. It is also contraindicated in patients who are allergic to xymetazoline. Each xymetazoline nasal drops can only be used by one person to prevent any cross infection. Patients are advised not to take decongestants continuously for more than 7 days.
Side Effects
The following side effects are occasionally encountered:
- Burning sensation in the nose and throat
- Local irritation
- Nausea and dryness of the nasal mucosa.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy group C. Xylometazoline should not be used during pregnancy. The use of Otrivin during lactation should only be done under the guidance of a doctor.
Precautions & Warnings
Xilozoline hydrochloride nasal drops for adults (0.1%) should not be used in children under 12 years of age. In the case of chronic rhinitis, drops should not be used for a long time. Long-term use of drops can cause rebound congestion and drug-induced rhinitis.
