Uses of Solas Oral Suspension

Treats Parasitic worm infections like:

• Threadworms (also called pinworms) or
• Other common worm infections (Ex. whipworm, roundworm, hookworm)

How does Solas Oral Suspension work?

‘Mebendazole’, which works by inhibiting tubulin polymerization. This causes metabolic disruption and energy depletion in the parasite, which leads to its immobilization. Thereby, Solas Oral Suspension kills the susceptible helminth and treats the infection.

• Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before eating.
• Avoid eating raw fish and meat.
• Thoroughly cook meat before consuming it.
• Properly wash all fruits and vegetables before eating them.
• Wash or reheat food that has been stored for a long time.
• Avoid contact with soil that may be contaminated with feces.
• Avoid consuming foods that have been kept open in markets as they may be contaminated.
• Drink boiled and purified water.
• Take Solas with food.
• If you have difficulty swallowing the whole tablet, you can crush or chew it and swallow it with a full glass of water.
• Avoid taking Solas during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use appropriate birth control measures to prevent pregnancy while taking the medication.
• Your doctor may monitor your blood counts and liver function before and during treatment with Solas.
• Avoid close contact with sick individuals or those with infections. Notify your doctor if you develop signs of infection.

Indication

Whipworm infection

This medicine is used for the treatment of Whipworm infection caused by the Trichuris trichiura strain.

Hookworm infection

• This medicine is used for the treatment of Hookworm infection caused by Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale strains.

Pinworm infection

• This medicine is used for the treatment of pinworm infection caused by Enterobius vermicularis strain.

Roundworm infection

• This medicine is used for the treatment of roundworm infection caused by the Ascaris lumbricoides strain.

Other parasitic infections

• This medicine is also used for other infections caused due to helminths. Infections treated may include Giardiasis, Filariasis, Toxocariasis, Hydatid disease, etc.

Pharmacology

Mebendazole is indeed a synthetic broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug that is effective against a variety of parasitic worms, including nematodes. Its mechanism of action involves preventing the worms from forming microtubules, which ultimately leads to the depletion of glucose and energy within the worms, resulting in their death.

When taken orally, Mebendazole is absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract, with approximately 2-10% of the oral dose being absorbed. The peak concentration of Mebendazole in the plasma occurs between 30 minutes to 7 hours after administration.

Mebendazole has a strong affinity for plasma proteins, which means that it binds to proteins in the blood. The half-life of elimination, which refers to the time it takes for half of the drug to be eliminated from the body, ranges from 2.8 to 9 hours.

Dosage & Administration of Solas Oral Suspension

Here is a summary of the recommended doses for adults and children:

Adult Dose:

• Enterobiasis (Pinworms): A single tablet (100 mg) or 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) of the suspension. If a cure is not achieved after 3 weeks, a second course of treatment is advised.
• Ascariasis, Ancylostomiasis, Trichuriasis: 100 mg twice daily (bid) for 3 consecutive days, 500 mg as a single dose, or 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) twice daily for 3 consecutive days. If a cure is not achieved after 3 weeks, a second course of treatment is advised.
• Taeniasis & Strongyloidiasis: 100 mg twice daily for 3 consecutive days. If a cure is not achieved after 3 weeks, a second course of treatment is advised.

Child Dose:

• Enterobiasis (Pinworms): Children older than 2 years can take a single tablet (100 mg) or 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) of the suspension. If a cure is not achieved after 3 weeks, a second course of treatment is advised.
• Ascariasis, Ancylostomiasis, Trichuriasis: Children older than 1 year can take 100 mg twice daily for 3 consecutive days or 500 mg as a single dose, or 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) twice daily for 3 consecutive days. If a cure is not achieved after 3 weeks, a second course of treatment is advised.
• Taeniasis & Strongyloidiasis: Children can take 100 mg twice daily for 3 consecutive days. If a cure is not achieved after 3 weeks, a second course of treatment is advised.

Interaction

Drug-Drug Interactions:

Contraindications

Pregnancy & Lactation

Mebendazole should not be used by pregnant women. Mebendazole is not known to be excreted in human milk. Because many medications are excreted in human milk, it's important to use caution while giving it to a nursing mother.
