Uses of Nuba Ointment

How does Nuba Ointment work?

• Bacitracin: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis; active against gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria.
• Neomycin: Inhibits protein synthesis and disrupts DNA synthesis; active against gram-negative aerobes and some strains of staphylococci.

Side Effects of Nuba Ointment

• Usually well-tolerated.
• Rare cases of allergic reactions.

Quick Suggestions:

• Neomycin Sulfate + Bacitracin Zinc helps treat bacterial skin infections.
• Use it once or twice daily, or as advised by your doctor. Treatment should be continued until at least two days after the condition has resolved.
• Do not apply it to broken skin and take care to avoid getting it in your eyes, nose or mouth.
• Do not cover the area being treated with airtight dressings such as bandages unless directed by a doctor, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
• It may cause temporary burning, itching or a redness at application site. This is usually mild. Consult your doctor if you experience a more severe reaction.
• Do not use it more often or for longer than advised by your doctor. Inform your doctor if your skin problem does not improve even after seven days of treatment.

Indication of Nuba Ointment

• Treatment of topical bacterial infections.
• Effective in atopic, contact stasis and infections, eczematoid dermatitis, neurodermatitis, eczema, and anogenital pruritus.
• May be useful as an adjunct in certain pyodermas, such as impetigo, during specific systemic antibiotic therapy for these infections.

Pharmacology

• Bacitracin: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis; active against gram-positive bacteria (e.g., staphylococci, streptococci, corynebacteria, and Clostridia) and some gram-negative species (e.g., Neisseria and Haemophilus influenzae).
• Neomycin: An aminoglycoside that binds to the 30S subunits of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and disrupting DNA synthesis. Active against many gram-negative aerobes and some strains of staphylococci.

Dosage & Administration of Nuba Ointment

Before use, clean the application area gently. Remove debris such as pus or crusts. Apply two to three times daily to the affected skin area.

Children and Infants: Suitable for use at the same dose as adults, but reduce the dose in infants. Not recommended for neonates.

Interaction

• Bacitracin Zinc: Increased risk of nephrotoxicity with other nephrotoxic drugs. May enhance the action of neuromuscular-blocking agents.
• Neomycin Sulphate: Additive nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effect with other aminoglycosides, bacitracin, cisplatin, vancomycin, amphotericin B, polymyxin B, colistin, and viomycin. Enhanced toxicity with potent diuretics. May impair the absorption of other drugs. May enhance the effect of acarbose. May enhance the effect of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants. May antagonize the parasympathomimetic effect of neostigmine and pyridostigmine. May increase the risk of hypocalcemia in patients receiving bisphosphonates. May alter INR when given with anticoagulants. May inactivate the oral typhoid vaccine.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to any of its components.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• The safe use during pregnancy & lactation has not been established.
• Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid use on large open wounds or severely injured skin.
• Not recommended for otitis external when the eardrum is perforated due to the risk of ototoxicity.
• Discontinue use if the condition persists or worsens after 1 week unless directed by a physician.

Storage Conditions

• Keep out of reach of children.
• Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light.
