Imipenem + Cilastatin
Common side effects of Imipenem include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, thrombophlebitis, thrombocytosis, neutropenia, eosinophilia, and liver and renal function abnormalities.
Cispenam 750, consisting of Cilastatin and Imipenem, is effective against a broad range of pathogens and is utilized in the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
Imipenem, the active component of Cispenam 750, functions as an antibacterial agent by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls in both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. By binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), particularly PBP-2, PBP-1a, and PBP-1b in certain bacterial strains, it disrupts cell wall production, leading to cell lysis and death.
The dosage of Imipenem should be tailored to the type and severity of infection, considering the susceptibility of pathogens, renal function, and body weight. It is typically administered intravenously over a specified period based on the recommended dosage guidelines for adults and pediatric patients.
Cilastatin may interact with probenecid, prolonging its half-life. Concurrent use with ganciclovir may increase the risk of generalized seizures.
Cispenam 750 is contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to the product.
Cispenam 750 is classified as Pregnancy Category C. Its use during pregnancy should be carefully considered, weighing the potential benefits against the risks to the fetus. Imipenem has been detected in human milk, so breastfeeding should be discontinued if Cispenam 750 is deemed essential.
Caution is advised when using Cispenam 750 in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to other beta-lactams, epilepsy, renal or hepatic dysfunction, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
